It's a health/dietary store specializing in organic foods and foods for every type of diet....vegan, gluten free, dairy free etc.

We who know of it refer to it as "Whole Paycheck" because of its exorbitant costs...

If she *has* to have Whole Foods, tell them she can pay for it.

It is not fair for another to inflict a heavy financial necessity on others.

I think our contribution will be bringing a dish or two. I guess it's not so much about the money as it is about paying $10 a person for a meal that serves 6-8. And we're 8 people. One plate each and no leftovers. :( Just doesn't seem worth it. And I wouldn't put it past my brother to get the meal for free from work and still ask all of us for money.

Just buy whatever and tell her it's whole foods. I bet you unless she digs the bag out of the garbage she won't know the difference.

It's where wealthier people go to shop so they don't have to be around ordinary folk Radu. They specialize in carrying all the fad products that cost a lot more but are no different really.

I have to say though, I've never seen a supermarket packed full of hotter women than the couple times I've been there. You're grandma must be hot pink sugar.

If you can't afford to go to this type of Thanksgiving this year than don't go. Just don't put so much emphasis on being upset that you can't afford it thus complicating your life. It's not worth the energy to be upset about this. Have a nice small Thanksgiving at home. You don't even need a dang turkey for it. Roast a chicken, eat some veggies and have a nice time watching the parade on tv.

Whoever's house it's at is who makes all the decisions on the food. If you're having it, don't let them tell you what to do. Just ignore them.

We decided not to go. My brother started creating all this drama that if we didn't pay the $20, we wouldn't eat. We made other plans and will visit either before or after dinner. Not going to deal with the drama anymore. For someone who never contributes, I'm not giving my brother a dime. I just don't think it's right, expenses aside.

Bravo, Pink!

Nothing makes me feel prouder of my dysfunctional family than hearing the tales of other dysfunctional families.

Right?!

I am rather annoyed with my BIL'S lack of holiday spirit.

I think you're doing the right thing. Honestly, by the end of the first page of this thread, I wanted to encourage you to blow off Thanksgiving dinner with your family. They're just being so uncompromising and ridiculous, even after you made several other suggestions as to how you two could contribute.

So what are your new plans for Thanksgiving dinner, if you don't mind my asking?

Going to see my dad a few miles away from there. He's been guilt tripping me about not seeing him enough even though we saw him all the time until we moved earlier this year. Funny you mention it though, when we said we weren't coming to the other festivities, my mom stepped up and said they wouldn't be going either if we didn't go and that then all of them could pay $20 a person. They didn't like that idea too much, so it looks like they will shut their mouths and accept whatever we do contribute if we still go.

Hm. I still wouldn't go, even if they finally accept something other than a Whole Foods prepared dinner. I would worry that people would be cranky that they didn't get the meal they couldn't even really afford.

Sounds like your dad would be very happy to see you. AND you wouldn't have to spend 30 bucks to get there? Sounds so much easier and nicer.

He lives in the same area as my grandmother, so we still have to travel. I think my other relatives will have to accept that we won't be paying money for their choice of dinner.

I like your Plan B. Who wants to go hang out with a family who's clearly dominated by a control freak. Maybe if you don't go and seem just fine with not going, your mom will decide not to enable Ms. Whole Foods next year.

We are doing a potluck next year to avoid all this nonsense. :lmao: Pink's grandmother had said this.

Thanksgiving went fine, but my grandmother fronted $20 for us even after we said we'd only contribute $10 and dessert. We found out later she wanted the rest of the money and we barely ate anything. Plus there were no leftovers and the whole foods dinner was mediocre at best.
