also, if I find out he's lying about anything I am done. I have NOT asked for fidelity from him, I've asked for honesty... if he can't do it that's fine, but let me know so I can make a decision on if I can be married to someone who keeps the truth from me. Give me at least that.

As others have already stated they are not exact and only an indicator. You only have one or two questions at most that you want the answer to and have to be yes or know questions. Also questions have to be quite succinct, nothing long and open ended. Questions that involve feelings are subjective and never give accurate results. The person is then asked many questions that are none threatening to get a reference on the persons reaction to benign questions. The key questions are mingled in and asked a couple of different ways. The examiner then compares the persons reaction to the key questions as compared to the benign questions and draws a conclusion. How well he does his job is essential to getting an effective test.

In your case you appear to already know the answers to the key questions, so I don't see this as a good tool. Your money would probably be better spent on counseling and being vigilant in observing his behavior. If your gut tells you something is wrong, it usually is wrong. Also is he honest in where and what he is doing. If lying about irrelevant things come easy to him, then big things will too.

I have heard that polygraphs are not reliable. I believe in the USA they're not admissible evidence for that reason. Elsewhere in the world, like here in the UK they are hardly used by the police either.

However, given the comments here on parking lot confessions it might be worth doing for that reason alone even if you don't trust the polygraph results.

I heard an interview with someone who'd failed a poly, even after explaining the problem, retaking it and giving a different answer each time to the same question. Because of the wording of the question, he could not answer correctly with either yes or no in his case. He said he'd had no wish to hide the information but could not answer the question truthfully as worded with either yes or no.
