Someone told me his brother in law did that to the baby to quiet it down - don't think he was quite that rough but he would hold its arms and legs still to try and make it stop crying. When he (the uncle) found out he became angry and spoke to the father about it. The father didn't mean any harm, was just totally clueless. Thankfully he listened and stopped it. Some people just don't have any child-care instincts. It's tough in your case because your ex is defensive and won't listen. I am not a parent but reading your post disturbed me.
