It comes off really, really, really bad if you're afraid to even give out your full name online. To a woman nonetheless. =/ You're lucky she's even still talking to you.

There are two different equally valid schools of thought on the subject but neither camp is going to change their mind. If you don't want to give her your name, don't but don't be upset if she refuses to meet you.

 

Yeah... the school of paranoid and crazy vs. the school of sane and rational.

 

You don't need to run a background check on the guy to meet him at Starbucks around noon. If you want to meet him at a hotel around midnight... you should be nervous.

I generally don't give out my full name to be honest. Mostly because if someone googles my name then they will find information about me I'm not ready to share. Nothing shady or unusual, just old links to forums I've posted extensively on, I don't like the idea of somebody reading up on me before we even meet! I also don't think having a guy's surname is particularly an indicator of it being safer to meet him so I wouldn't really expect to find that out before meeting either. I'd just meet in a busy, public place, have a friend know where I am, and tell them to expect a call from me mid-date to let them know I'm okay and a call at the end to let them know I'm home safe. Some might call that paranoid but personally when meeting random people from the internet I think it's safe.

 

I have a pseudonym on facebook too. I had my real name on when I started dating my now-boyfriend but didn't accept his request until we'd officially got together a few weeks into dating. I'd rather get to know each other offline in person bit by bit than give someone access to THAT much information about me in one fell swoop for them to peruse at their leisure. It ruins all the fun!
