Yesterday I was having lunch with a friend. She had been scrolling through Facebook on her phone while she was waiting for me to arrive.

When I sat down, she showed me a post that one of her friends had made and said "Isn't this so sweet?"

The woman had posted that the guy she has been dating for a few months had asked her to watch his daughter when he went out of town. She agreed. The next morning when the doorbell rang she expected it to be him dropping off his daughter. Instead it was a delivery man with a flower arrangement, a teddy bear and a note that said he was just joking about watching his daughter and here was something for her to cuddle with while he was gone.

All of her friends were commenting "how sweet" and "what a great guy."

My first thought was that is really shady and suspicious to me. Why would he ask her to watch his daughter and then say he was just joking?? The flower and teddy bear delivery, while sweet on the surface, seems like a distraction from whatever funny business he is up to.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about my reaction versus the reactions of everyone else who commented on that post. I'm a little shocked at how jaded I seem to have become.

Is it just me or does this seem strange to anyone else?

The situation itself has nothing to do with me….I don't even know this woman, so it's none of my business whether or not anything shady is actually going on in her relationship….I really am more interested in/concerned about my reaction to it than anything else. Why didn't I see it as the sweet gesture that everyone else saw it as??

Eventually it's all a matter of perspective.

I shall present some of them with the quote of the woman.

1. "Wow, what a relief, I don't have to watch after his daughter! And I also got some nice flowers and a teddy from him! How sweet..."

2. "Wait, so he lied to me? Why did I have to make time for something that doesn't actually happen? Got me stuck alone..." - like a prank.

3. "Why does he send me flowers and teddies through a delivery man? Why can't he just give it to me himself? Is he trying to keep me away from something?" - your perspective more or less.

I can write many, but as I said, it's all a matter of perspective upon a perhaps complicated situation.

OP,

Your reaction falls within the spectrum of normal, IME.

I would have found the whole thing strange; not shady necessarily, but odd.

Can't say I would have been cooing over the gesture, and I coo a lot.
