extremis Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 my dad does not like my cat because he feels it makes a mess in the house and he does not like him jumping on the furniture and stuff. My dad said if I cannot control the cat he will kill him or throw him out. Can my dad legally do this?
Allumere Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 a) Does your father often use threats or intimidation or is this just a one time blow up? Because those kinds of threats can be linked to abusers. b) Is the cat creating a mess? Is there anything you can do better in regards to the cat's litter box, grooming, vacuuming more etc? c) Is there a way to limit where the cat roams in the house? d) If this is his home and not yours he could insist the cat be removed. He has ZERO right to touch, harm, neglect, antagonize, or injure the animal. e) I would contact your local human society in regards to animal cruelty laws in your area. f) I would get a list of cat rescues in the event things escalate and you need to remove the cat immediately for its own protection....I would suggest leaving as well. 3
Tayla Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 I agree with all the inquiries Allumere made...(good Questions!) Did your Dad give you consent with conditions to have the house pet? Sounds like the main concern is the upkeep of the animal and its habits. Dogs are easier to train then cats I fear...Cats are natural jumpers. Find some cat toys or a spot that is neutral territory for the cat to roam.
lollipopspot Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 I think you need to get the cat somewhere safe! Do you know someone who can take good care of the cat? Can you move out (and keep the cat in your room until you do)? It doesn't matter what the law is, if he wants to hurt the cat he will, and what happens after the fact is irrelevant as far as the cat being hurt. When you move with a cat, if the cat is indoor-outdoor, then the cat must stay indoor for a good month before going out. This is the way a lot of cats get lost. But the very best thing is to always keep your cat indoors. 1
