simplicity1 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 If a French guy has known you for a little while but does the double cheek kiss with you, is it a sign that he only wants friendship ? What is the cultural standard? Thanks!
TAV Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 I'm not French but lived there for a while and the double cheek kiss is indeed just a sign of friendship, a way of greeting a friend. Why are you asking? Do you want him to be more than a friend?
evanescentworld Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 In France Nord, it's three, in the south it's one or two... in some parts it's one, two or even 4... it depends where you are. But in all and every case it's nothing to do with Romance at all, and it's just the way the French are. Much more info, here. Bisou bisou!
jeffmeyers Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 The double cheek kiss (la bise) is even given among men. It means nothing.
Author simplicity1 Posted September 14, 2014 Author Posted September 14, 2014 I think I didn't phrase my question correctly. I know that the double kiss is a normal greeting among French. I have a crush on this guy and I'm wondering if him doing that is him trying to indicate to me that he just sees me as any other friend. Would a French guy still give this greeting to a girl he had a crush on, or would he do something different?

evanescentworld Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Trust me - a Frenchman fancying you? you'd know it. He's just being friendly; any other intentions, he would be sure the signals were clear. 2

preraph Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 (edited) Trust me, if a French guys wants you, you'll know it! Once I was at an American French cafe checking out. There was a huge tall pepper shaker about two feet tall by the register. I said, "Oh, my God, that's a huge pepper shaker." The French cashier smiled lasciviously and said, "That's because it ees Fwench.":) Edited September 14, 2014 by preraph
Gloria25 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Well, I'm from a Hispanic culture and the kiss on both cheeks are when someone is familiar with you - but not necessarily in a romantic way...Sometimes I've even gotten my hand held while I'm being talked to. Yeah, it still catches me by surprise when it's done to me... Weird cuz when I first move to my parent's Hispanic country, the familiarity of the people shocked me...but, by the time I adjusted - and even welcomed it - I returned to the U.S. and didn't get how Americans were, IMO, so cold. Now, I'm one of them, I come home, close my door and don't speak to anyone...and, if anyone wants to speak to me, I wonder why they are trying to get into my business (and, that usually "is" the case... nosy parkers).
