Toodaloo Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Reading through another thread about height got me thinking. How "big" is fat? I am afraid that I don't go much on BMI (long time ago mine was "overweight" when my family doctor and mother convinced I was anorexic - 13 inch waist - was smaller than neck and couldn't put weight on due to amount of exercise I used to do both for work and fun, but was stuffing food into myself like a pig...) so I was thinking if we go on "dress size" it may be a bit more "proportionate". So what is fat? Or unattractively fat? This seems to come up a lot when people ask about their profiles on Online Dating sites. What is thin? Or unattractively thin? For reference (Please imagine in a table) UK/ Australia 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 etc Euro 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50 etc US 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 etc
mightycpa Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 So what is fat? a natural oily or greasy substance occurring in animal bodies, especially when deposited as a layer under the skin or around certain organs Or unattractively fat? In the eye of the beholder. God made chubby chasers too. I understand it can be a fetish. 1
Ninjainpajamas Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) I'm 33 and I still don't understand waist sizes with women, it's like me asking women how big should a man's biceps be in inches? So it's almost completely foreign to me what these sizes actually mean. I have never actually looked or thought to even remember them. I'm going to take a wild guess and say anything above a size 16 in US...after all I'm about a size 32 (with a belt) by that logic, she's half my size! Edited September 11, 2014 by Ninjainpajamas 1
Gaeta Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I think dress size is useless. If you're 5'10'' tall and your dress size is 10-12 you look stunning. If you're 5'1'' tall and your dress size is 10-12 then you may look chubby. Also depends where is your fat. I got my fat in boobs and bum with a flat stomach, I turn heads no problem at 150-lbs. My best friend is the SAME weight at me BUT she has no boobs, no bum, and her weight is all on her stomach...lets say she has less success than I in dating. Studies shows men don't care if you are a size 4-6-8-10 or even 16. What catches their attention is your ratio waist/hips. The ideal ratio in women ranges between 0.67 and 0.8. If you've got that, you are sexy no matter your size. 7

Does that help? As for biceps - your right - not a dickies! Could give you a better guide in waist and shirt size!
central Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I like close to a 0.7 waist to hip ratio for women, as long as the hip value isn't too large - which is a personal, visually determined choice (but I'd estimate a hip value should be somewhat less than two thirds the height). A bulging belly is also an instant turn-off for me.
BluEyeL Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Meh...who cares. Big butts are back in style I'm early 40s, a size 10 and hourglass shaped. Not stunning (was in my 20s), but who's mine is gonna be mine regardless. I have no trouble dating. True, the super hot guys don't go for me, but it really doesn't matter at all. Well...as long as he's tall
somedude81 Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 I don't understand dress sizes at all. Very few men do. BMI is pretty effective for women as the average woman doesn't have enough muscle to throw the numbers off, like it does for men. Still the most effective way to tell what fat is height and weight. Some people will make a comment that the average woman is 5'3 and 160 lbs. That's a BMI of 28.3. That's on the top end of overweight Overweight = 25–29.9 Just because it's average, doesn't mean it's not fat. That just means that unfortunately the average woman is fat. And I'm sure the average man is fat as well.
FitChick Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) Post a clear, current photo, full length, and men who find your body attractive will contact you. I don't mention weight or measurements or dress size. Clothing sizes today are "vanity sized" -- the fatter you are the smaller your dress size. Rubbish! In college I wore a size 8 and I was 5'8" tall and 120 lbs. Women who wear a size 8 now probably weigh 150 lbs. Edited September 11, 2014 by FitChick 1
Poppygoodwill Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 it's all about proportion for most people. If you're proportionate btween hips, waist and bust, then you'll look good. 1
DazedandConfused8 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Reading through another thread about height got me thinking. How "big" is fat? BMI is one of the most unreliable and disproven methods for measuring "fatness." Simply dividing weight by height doesn't work. Haha if that's what people think no wonder almost every guy who contacted me or met me said I shouldn't list overweight in my profile but average or athletic when I'm clearly overweight.
Lani Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Haha if that's what people think no wonder almost every guy who contacted me or met me said I shouldn't list overweight in my profile but average or athletic when I'm clearly overweight. And this is where the issue of people lying on their online dating profiles comes from. If you're overweight in your opinion then list yourself as such. If people don't contact you then that's an issue for them, not you. You want someone who's going to take you as you are, and honesty should be part of that.
ascendotum Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Haha if that's what people think no wonder almost every guy who contacted me or met me said I shouldn't list overweight in my profile but average or athletic when I'm clearly overweight. Average = thick, slightly overweight now. (in terms of the general population not what used to be normal) Average = between those 'bit extra' and 'average' pics. I think many women would err on the side of 'average' as opposed to 'overweight' when it comes to OLD, if they thought they were a bit overweight but not wanted to think they were 'fat'. Same with guys.

Yes it may be shallow, but people are entitled to their preferences when dating. It's only a little untruth, but it's unnecessary. (edit to apologise- I reread your post to say that 'women err on the side', not that they should) My statement still stands true for me though.
Gloria25 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 What about muscle? I work out a lot and have muscle...

LOL no. Average is a group of women with different body types. The term average itself is worthless. The woman you linked to for a bit extra is actually obese. The Overweight woman is morbidly obese. BMI does work for most women.
somedude81 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 What about muscle? I work out a lot and have muscle... I doubt you have enough muscle to actually make a difference. Most likely you can just call yourself fit and be done with it.

Body fat % is a better indicator if you can get that tested. BMI is a load of bollocks in my opinion.
somedude81 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 No it doesn't. Body fat % is a better indicator if you can get that tested. BMI is a load of bollocks in my opinion. BMI gets screwed up when people have a lot of muscle. It simply doesn't work for guys who are fit. Most women don't have that much muscle on them so BMI is a quick and dirty way to see if the woman is overweight. Simply put, if a guy is 6' 210 pounds, there is no way to know if he's fat or fit with just the numbers. If a woman is 5'4 170 lbs, in the vast majority of cases it's because she's fat.

It also doesn't work for women who are fit. I'm gunna go out on a limb here and say that there are likely just as many women who are muscle dense as there are men. BMI is the 'easy' way to track it, yes, but for those who are looking further for a true reading body fat % is the only way to go. BMI is better used as a shock tactic to those who are severely overweight and essentially never work out. From there it's anybody's guess as to whether it's true or not.
FitChick Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 If you're overweight in your opinion then list yourself as such. Anorexics think they are overweight so your solution won't work. Like I said before, POST CLEAR, CURRENT PHOTOS and forget about BMI. If you don't want to do that, at least post your measurements. 1

Or should they just not answer that section at all, creating more suspense?

You can't always tell how fat a person is if they're standing on their own.
