aab45 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 So I'm trying to branch out a bit and am planning on going to a Lock and Key singles party in a few weeks. Just curious to hear from anyone who has attended one of these parties and what the general vibe was like.
Disillusioned Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I went to one 4 years ago, and it wasn't what I expected. Before I went, I thought I and the other men would each be given a key which would only open certain hotel room doors. Inside each hotel room was a woman, and if you were lucky, you'd like each other. If not, you tried at the next event. Well, it wasn't anything like that. Basically it's pretty much just your standard-issue bar meet, with a lame gimmick that's supposed to be a conversation starter: the men are all given necklaces with keys on them, and the women are given necklaces with little padlocks on them. Then all of us shy guys get to sit on the sidelines and get ignored while we watch the guys who have the gift of gab hit on all the women. I did get something positive out of it, however... I'll use my incorrect vision of a lock & key event in some book I'll write in the future. 3
Diezel Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Thread over. Disillusioned wins. But to add onto this, it's EXACTLY what Dis says. It's a standard meet-and-greet with a gimmick attached to it. It boils down to just the way he stated. I've seen so much disaster happen. And usually the key that does open the lock are two people who would never really talk to each other and probably never did after.
evanescentworld Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Shame that people feel they need to resort to cheap gimmicks to actually get any form of conversation going. If I were you, I'd get to the party, get given a key, then when all is settled, take it off, loudly proclaim you don't intend to use the key as a euphemism or metaphor, and declare that "if any young lady would like to be treated as a human being, instead of a piece of furniture I have the key to, I'm open to normal conversation. I'll be at the bar. Thank you for listening." And go. I guarantee you you'll get more respect and takers that way. 2
PegNosePete Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Or just take a paper clip and impress all the ladies by unlocking all of their locks without even needing the key. Now there is a conversation starter. You should probably practice beforehand though... 1
d0nnivain Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 If you are shy it can be a way to motivate you to talk to a woman. You do have a reason. You are trying to see if your key fits. The point isn't always to find the "match" because the literal one may not be the person you should date.

If you'r a shy guy though I can't imagine it being any less awkward if it was what you originally thought. You really think opening someone's hotel room and a random woman is in there would have been any less awkward of a scenario? I doubt. I can't even fathom that scenario...me sitting in a hotel and any random man that I may or may not like comes opening the door and now we have to make conversation or turn each other away. I don't have sex with people I've just met anyway, so I wouldn't have agreed to such a party but I find the scenario you imagined to be far more awkward than a meet and greet. 1
FitChick Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I thought this was going to be about those parties in the Fifties where married couples threw their car keys into a big bowl on the coffee table and then if a man grabbed the keys of another woman, she had to go home with him. Martha Stewart used to go to those parties with her then husband.
irc333 Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 We have a local Meetup deemed the <Name of City> Social Club. They've been having quite a few SINGLES themed Meetups lately, but with a more of an itinerary of sorts. A speed dating event, then some staged "Dating Game Event", ice breaker games, and so on. Not such a bad idea really, esp. with the organizer putting so much into it. So I'm trying to branch out a bit and am planning on going to a Lock and Key singles party in a few weeks. Just curious to hear from anyone who has attended one of these parties and what the general vibe was like.
WesternWizard Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Why would you show up to an event just to express your disdain of said event? I would just think a person who did that was a douche, and an overall miserable person. Good question. Come to think of it, that's probably why I haven't seen any lock and key parties being promoted on any of the usual singles event sites in the last two years.
