Moose Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I know what it means to me. But what will you tell your kids it means?
tiki Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I tell them what it is. The day Jesus rose from the dead, a couple of days after Good Friday. Then I eat all their chocolate. Preach on, brotha!
Pocky Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I don't have children, but my husband and I play Easter Bunny and fill our baskets up with goodies. I'm not Christian - you know that already though. However, I will say, while we're on the subject of religion, that I'm studying Deuteronomy and looking forward to the discussion regarding divorce.
alphamale Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 nothing cause of two reasons: 1) my family is not Christian 2) i dont' care about organized religion anyways
LucreziaBorgia Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I teach my kid about it from a historical and a religious perspective: favoring no one story over the other. She will believe in the one she chooses to believe in. She likes the Christian perspective in general, with the pagan explanation of the origin of eggs and bunnies in the context of the holiday. Me personally? I'm not religious, but I find the story of Easter/Oester interesting nonetheless.
EC Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Theres a story behind easter!?! Its not just eggs hunts and chocolate bunnies?
whichwayisup Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I tell them what it is. The day Jesus rose from the dead, a couple of days after Good Friday. Then I eat all their chocolate. Preach on, brotha! I eat too chocolate. Then my Tummy hurts... As a kid I remember asking my folks about what Easter meant. They tried their best to explain it to me (both my sis, bro and I were brought up with not a whole lot of religion, by choice from the parents) and I guess I got confused...Easter morning came and I thought my grandfather was gonna "rise from the grave" and give me more chocolates!! I guess I was too young to fully understand it all...Was funny though! I look back at Easter and to me I know it is about family, being around those you care about.
HokeyReligions Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I was taught, and I taught my children, that Easter is a Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We read from the Bible (children's Bible) the story of Good Friday, the crucifixion, and how Jesus arose and appeared to Mary and His disciples, etc. I was told this was the truth, but with my children I explained that many people believe this to be the truth, but not all people believe. Even so, those who do not necessarily believe will sometimes celebrate on that day with human symbols such as the Easter Bunny and gifts of Chocolate and decorations of colored eggs, etc. I explained that while the celebration may seem to be the same for everyone, it means something different to each person. The same way I explained Christmas. We colored eggs, and had baskets and bunnies and chicks, etc., but we also went to church so that they could be exposed to the religious side and see how others felt and celebrated and then they could make up their own minds about religion when they grew up. I was never given an opportunity to decide for myself, I was TOLD it was the truth and that if I didn’t believe in it that I would burn forever in hell. I did not want to do that to my kids.

blind_otter Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 You know what's weird? I was raised Catholic (btw, why do some christian people insist that catholics are going to burn in hell???? ) Anyways we never did diddly squat for Easter. I mean we attended mass or whatever but I never got a frikkin basket and what do rabbits and chocolate have to do with jesus dying for our sins?
Pocky Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Originally posted by blind_otter You know what's weird? I was raised Catholic (btw, why do some christian people insist that catholics are going to burn in hell???? ) If I remember correctly it has to do with idolatry.
Author Moose Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 Originally posted by Pocky If I remember correctly it has to do with idolatry. I believe it has something to do with Christ still being on the cross. Is it true that most Catholics don't believe that Jesus rose from the dead?
blind_otter Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Originally posted by Moose I believe it has something to do with Christ still being on the cross. Is it true that most Catholics don't believe that Jesus rose from the dead? Um. No. That would make them Jewish, I believe.
Pocky Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Originally posted by Moose I believe it has something to do with Christ still being on the cross. Is it true that most Catholics don't believe that Jesus rose from the dead? Yes, Catholics believe in the resurrection. And I believe to be Jewish you don't believe that Jesus was the son of God, but only a prophet. (I'm studying Hebrew Scriptures now so I'll know more about the Jewish religion at a later date) If I can remember correctly I still think it has to do with idolatry. I believe it's because some Catholics pray to Mary and different saints for assistance rather than praying directly to God (Jesus).
blind_otter Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Originally posted by Pocky If I remember correctly it has to do with idolatry. Oh, saint's statues and Christ on the cross and all that? So, according to some christians it's ok to, say, have a cross, but not a crucafix? I know numerous christians who wear crosses.... You know that actually the only thing I really like about the Catholic mass - the pageantry, the solemn way that the priest goes through these specific rites and sacraments.
bluechocolate Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 from blind_otter (btw, why do some christian people insist that catholics are going to burn in hell???? ) Because they're jealous ! I was raised Catholic also. from Moose Is it true that most Catholics don't believe that Jesus rose from the dead? Are you serious? Catholics most certainly believe that Jesus rose from the dead. It is the very foundation of the church. Otherwise, as blind_otter says: That would make them Jewish, I believe
blind_otter Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 My Dad's half jewish but MAN he looks 100% jewish. I call him "stereotype jew" sometimes because he looks like he's about to break out in some kind of song and dance about how he enjoys being a jew or something like that. To the tune of "Sunrise, Sunset" or worse, "I enjoy being a girl". Oh that was sssssssssssooooooo-Un-PC.
alphamale Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Originally posted by blind_otter To the tune of "Sunrise, Sunset" or worse, "I enjoy being a girl". Oh that was sssssssssssooooooo-Un-PC. Actually it should be that tune from Fiddler on the Roof: "If I were a Rich man" or something like that
blind_otter Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Originally posted by alphamale Actually it should be that tune from Fiddler on the Roof: "If I were a Rich man" or something like that :lmao: "Stereotype Jew Guy" Now you see how it feels to have yer thread hijacked, Moose!

I think the above would fall under iconolatry. I think that some Christians believe that Catholics will burn in hell because they incorporate religious activities that go against the Ten Commandments. Specifically, these: 3. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

I´m pretty sure though that they do believe in the Antichrist.

They are not allowed to make pictures? Idolatry?
Author Moose Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 I do know that alot of Christians feel that since Catholics pray certain prayers to be forgiven of their sins is a no no. The only way to be forgiven is through Jesus Himself.
