I started a new job two weeks ago. There are two men who work there who (on the surface) seem like good guys. I base this on the fact that I have said nothing more than "Hi how are you" and introduced myself to them with handshakes. Who is to say that anything can and will go beyond that at this point. I have three questions for the general forum here:

1) Has anyone ever been involved in an office romance?

2) If so, how did you (or the other party) approach the other about it?

3) If it continues after a few get togethers, how do you handle things in the workplace between the two of you?

Truth be told, I am afraid of anything progressing even if the opportunity presents itself. I think office romances are very high risk behavior.

Know your office:

Is it a factory with 20 people in a room 100% of the time, then ahh, high risk of dealing with the aftermath.

Is it some university with 1000 staff, and you manage one building, he teaches in another, separate chain of command and infrequent mingling, then this is sounding rather ideal.

It it a set in stone career where people stay 10+ years, or a replaceable job?

I have similar questions, the situation of work really matters.

It all depends on your potential mate.

Do you want to get with someone that will air your dirty laundry out, or do you want to get with someone that is respectful, even if you guys arnt together.

Usually after work meetings start office romances

Considering your track record with men, things will only end badly. At least if you date non-coworkers and it's a disaster, no one will ever know.

Yes but we were friends for ages before and knew each other well enough to understand that we could keep things civil if we fell out.

Got gradually closer I guess. Then had one too many drinks one night, the conversation turned quite hot, we started chatting on facebook and via the phone and went on a date within a week.

We are in different departments but work together much closer than before because we talked about work a lot. He has actually recommended me for a company award even though we had already broken up. He is an awesome guy and it's a real shame it didn't work out.

Otherwise we kept it completely quiet, most of the interaction was/is work related in public, all private conversation done in private. NEVER ever in front of colleagues.

Yes. I think my situation is an exception.

You just started at this job. Focus on your new responsibilities, developing a professional relationship with your boss, and putting the best foot forward.

Well this has come up well let's say a few times before

DON'T DO IT! -- no good outcome at all

You are right. I'm not one of those people who should be with someone. Not just from this quotation, and I am not being defensive on this. I admit that I am a bit on the odd side, but I am also not a push over either. I think most guys want uneducated, trashy women who will just bend to them at all times. I'll just forget about it and continue down my path.

I think office romances are a bad idea and most don't end well. I would say since you have only been working there two weeks to definitely not get involved with either of these men. It doesn't take long for office gossip to start and you don't want a bad reputation.
