LittleMiss Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 Has anyone ever heard of or know anyone that was born with Hirshprungs Disease. I think that's how you spell it. It's a birth defect and is more common in males than females. I was wondering because I have never heard of it, and my nephew, who was born last week, was diagnosed with it. He was never able to have a BM on his own.
bluechocolate Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 Hirschsprung - though your spelling seems to be acceptable also. Just did a quick search on the net - look it up - something to do with not having fully developed nerve endings in the intestinal tract. Seems its not that uncommon - about 1 in every 5000 babies and yes, more common in boys. Hope your nephew is OK.
Author LittleMiss Posted March 1, 2005 Author Posted March 1, 2005 thanks. I've looked it up and read some info about it, but I can't find anything about the long term effects of having this. I just thought maybe someone could help if they have this or know someone who did. I want to know if when he grows up he will be normal. I mean he won't need to wear a diaper for a long time or will he?
brashgal Posted March 1, 2005 Posted March 1, 2005 http://www.pedisurg.com/PtEduc/Hirschprung's_Disease.htm sounds like it depends upon whether parts of the bowel do have the necessary nerve endings. Looks like these kids can develop other diseases later in life too. He'll probably need some testing. http://www.familyvillage.wisc.edu/lib_hirs.htm#Mail Support groups listed at above url - they'd be likely to give you real life experience/useable info.
