I was listening to the radio, and one of the hosts mentioned a drive-in theatre in my county. Surprisingly my state has around 25 drive-ins, but really only 1 per county. Hence some people have a good drive to reach one. The host had to drive 90 minutes to reach the one in my county.

Anyways, it got me thinking...what a great early date idea. Its just retro and a bit different. Ive been in my town for 7 years, and have never went to this drive-in even though its only 20 minutes away. I was thinking to use this as a possible date plan. Because it does seem that a lot of people around here haven't been to the drive-in either.

It'd be like "That 70s Show"...get some snacks...and sit comfy in the back of the SUV with the door up.

Id like to here everyone's experience with this. And please let me know your age bracket, and whether this was a recent or past trip. Id like to compare the past era of drive-ins vs what is left today. From what Ive read, at the peak of the industry 25% of all theaters were drive-ins...and today only 1-2% are drive-ins.

Also, for women over 23....would you like such a date idea? Or do you think thats something only for highschool and college kids? (im 27)

Well, I'm 21 and my bf is 24...but we did a date like that...twice. Because it was so much fun! The drive-in at my location plays 3 movies for 12$, which is much cheaper than regular movie theaters. So we just sneaked a ton of snacks in and watched movies all night and it was a blast!

Got my first hand-job at a drive in movie when I was 16. I was by myself....Kidding! It was a good date for sure though.

Never had drive-ins in my country so when I came to the States, it was something I always wanted to do.

This was a third date for me. He got the snacks and drinks. When we got there, he laid out the blanket in the back of the SUV and we had a little picnic in the car and watched the movie. If you don't want to lay out in the back of your car, you could use folded chairs. We did at some point sit out and it was a beautiful night so watching the movie, the stars...I enjoyed it. He even brought bug repellent along with a citronella candle to keep mosquitoes away.

There was a little shop in the back where they sold snacks and drinks. In between every parking spot, there's a portable like speaker that you place in your car for audio. No smoking or alcohol allowed. Tickets were $8 a piece.

I really enjoyed it. It was intimate, something I always wanted to do and I thoroughly liked that he came up with that idea and put the effort into planning everything.

As far as I know, he mentioned it was the only one that we had in state and it was about 60 years old. Date was about a little more than a year ago. In my 40s.

Used to go all the time with my first girlfriend. She had a minivan so we packed that thing full of pillows, blankets, snacks, and pizza. Park backwards, pop open the back hatch, and lay there together and enjoy the movie. This also is great if you have a pickup.

Nowadays I like to go to the drive in to hot box the car :D

Definitely was the fun thing to do during the summers of my high school and college years.

Yep used to go all the time when I was in high school. We'd sneak beer in and have a blast..

They no longer exist in my area. The value of the land exceed the revenue the theater generated. Basically the land was worth $15-20 million tack on a 3.3% property tax.. That's $660,000 a year in property taxes.. Good luck making a profit..

A few weeks before the one where I lived closed one of my BFFs & I (2 then 20 something straight women) went to the drive-in together to watch the movie because we'd always want to go to a drive in & we figured this might be our only chance.

It wasn't my favorite way to watch a movie. The sound wasn't great. My car smelled like popcorn

It might be a cute kitch-y date but you need to make sure that your date is comfortable & doesn't think you just want some "back seat action." ;)

I'm 66 years old and in my days of teenager and 20's we always went to the drive in. Didn't matter what the movie was playing because 3/4 of the people that went to drive ins didn't go to watch the movie.

Now before the movie started I would take my date to the snack bar and we loaded up with good old extra salty popcorn loaded with melted butter if it really was butter. Quart size cups of Cokes, a bunch of napkins, then we watched the movie, ate the pop corn and after that climbed in the back seat and as far as anyone care, the big screen they showed the movie on could have burned down and no one noticed.

Now should you go? If you never went then hell yeah go and experience it for the fun of it and enjoy yourself.

Yep, did this a couple months ago - probably 4th date(ish) time frame. It was a great idea for an date early in the relationship because it is relatively cheap, provides entertainment, but you can still talk and have some conversation if you want (unlike a movie theatre). I also love to pack a cooler full of drinks and snacks.

drive ins are a perfect idea for a date ...it is retro it is cool, if you want to talk you can without getting the glares or shhhes and it is a definite more relaxing date than sitting in a movie theatre.......snacks laughs good times is what i remember about drive ins they should bring them back ...i think they are cheap and wonderful...and i am over forty lol.....but drive ins were my era so ...yeah i miss them ...haven't been to one in years....and it was a date i went on...deb

There aren't any near where I live, but I'd definitely go if there was!

Kaylan, it makes me sad to see these parking theaters closed up. I loved going to the outdoor theater. So romantic when we would watch a horror movie and share a box of milk duds. Ah, I can remember the songs playing, the smell of the butter popcorn and the colognes of my dates. My favorite bf was so cute letting me sit on his football letter jacket which I couldn't wear because we went to rival schools. I love it and it is so much more intimate than a theater. Have a great time and let us know what you thought.

I've never experienced it but I would love to! I doubt there are any places near me but I would be all for it. It'd be a fun, new experience.

To this day I've never seen the second half of "Dr. Zhivago".

I doubt girls who go out with me have a problem with a little action  But actually that wouldnt be my intention. Id just wanna do something different and new that neither of us have done.
