hockeydan Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 So I am moving completely out of my ex and my apartment. After she dumped me a little over a month and a half ago, I left the state we were in and drove to my parents place half across the country. I am unemployed so it allowed me the chance to get out of there, but the job I was waiting on back in her state is taking longer to start, so I am driving back to collect my things and move out for good. We decided on all of the items, so that's not a problem. My issue is I kind of want to have our dog come back with me. I have lost my girlfriend and best friend to this breakup and I don't want to lose the dog as well. She is really attached to the dog, and she had to convince me to get it in the first place, but I would say that I have put more time and energy into raising the dog than she has. The night she broke up with me she said I could have the dog, but being the nice (and completely devastated) guy that I am, I told her she could have the dog. Now I wish I wouldn't have said that and would have kept the dog. The breakup was the "I love you, but not in love with you" types. No angry words, just heartbreak. Should I ask to have the dog? I am not trying to hurt or manipulate my ex, I just don't want to lose everything in this breakup. Plus I loved that damn dog almost as much as my ex....until she broke my heart, now the dog is far in the lead.

Just make sure you want the dog for the right reasons and not as a subconscious way to keep something that you two had alive. It's not worth it, i did something similar, had our dog for 9 months after she left but I couldn't move on whilst he was still with me. You're unemployed, can you afford to keep a dog? 1
