d'Arthez Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 These are fairly new developments. Also, you must consider that a person with less body weight, would need less of the medicine. Depakote causes weight-gain, because it causes the neurochemicals in the body to give the signals "hunger", and the user of these medicines actually starts to eat more. How would you otherwise gain possibly 100 lbs? If it was solely because of the Depakote, you have to grow 150 years old! Much like Lithium causes a lot of thirst (as Lithium is a salt, chemically quite similar to sodium). And if you drink more, other bodily processes happen, which cause, blah blah blah. Because these medicines are heavy duty to the mind, you would try to use it as less as possible. That's why psychiatrists always try to monitor usage of these medicine quite carefully. These "standard" dosages, don't have a meaning in itself.
