Terms of Endearment

Recommended Posts

This question is mostly for the guys;

Which 'terms of endearment' are you most likely to use in regard to the females in your lives, eg; platonic female friend, girlfriend, lover, wife?

For instance, one would expect a male to reserve the pet names of 'Darling', 'Sweetheart', to his wife. The female platonic friend is addressed always by her 'first' name perhaps (wouldn't want to give the female platonic friend the wrong impression by calling her Darling)? A girlfriend/lover by 'Babe'?

Does it depend on how comfortable you feel with a female perhaps, as to which 'term of endearment' you will use when speaking to her? Or are Darling, Sweetheart, Babes reserved for the special females in your life, those you feel closest too?

I am female! But am going to reply to this! he he

Well I think it really does depend on the personality of the person. For example, my old boss was such a fantastic bloke he always called me darling, gorgeous etc. He was a very sweet man and we had a really good friendship - he was happily married.

I dont think it matters in which circumstances they use these terms of endearment. I think one can tell how it is supposed to be interperated!

Sounds as though he felt comfortable enough with you and in your presence to be able to call you by those names and you felt comfortable having him call you by those names. However if this was a guy you hardly knew and he was suddenly calling you by 'Darling' or 'Gorgeous', rather than your first name, you'd think there was an underlying motive for him doing so perhaps...as in he was attracted to you? Know I'd be suspicious of a guy calling me 'Darling' or 'Gorgeous' if I hardly knew him, lol.

Also forgot to add, what term of endearment a guy might use when corresponding with 'ex-girlfriends'. Towards an ex girlfriend

that you are no longer interested in and towards an ex-girlfriend that you are perhaps trying to win back. Would a guy call an 'ex' by 'Babes' if he was no longer interested in her, other than being 'friends'? One would have thought not because it's sending off the wrong impression to the ex.

How about if you are friends with a female you are interested in and you are on first name terms. Would a guy use a pet name to get closer to this female (as he got to know her better) and as a means of creating greater intimacy between them? Like going from 'first name' basis to calling her by 'Babe' or whatever?

So what should I call you? :o

I have to confess that there are a couple of girls I would call Darling or Sweetheart or Honey... but in general that's because the relationship is unambiguously non-romantic. And I don't do it all the time - only at moments of great emotion for them, eg they're upset, they've just had a great triumph, etc...
