I hear it all the time. although literally it means " don't judge me" , it seems to get over used , misused. It also occurs to me that in many ways its a deflection meaning " I do dumb things and I don't want to hear about it" . I' have many specific instances in mind where it was used . I'm thinking back about a failed relationship where it was used almost daily . Now I'm meeting somebody new and she just said that to me so I thought " uh-oh , I better get to the bottom of this" . help me !

From my experience, "don't judge me" is a playful phrase not meant to be taken with a serious reaction. It's like if I were to eat a whole gallon of ice cream and my girlfriend were to look at me like I'm crazy, I might say "don't judge me." In all honestly, I don't give a **** if people judge me or not, but it's just my way of poking fun back when I notice that you're looking at me in a certain way, or anticipate that you're having thoughts about what I'm doing being weird.

You're right. I also think the term 'don't judge me' has become overused and MISUSED. People usually use that term to cover up for their wrongdoings - and they are very well aware of their wrongdoings. Don't judge me is now a cover-up and used as an excuse for people who know very well that what they're doing is worthy of being judged.

I don't know, most of the time when I hear people say "don't judge" they are doing something that they know is harmful or morally wrong and they just don't want to hear the truth.

I've never heard anyone say it in a really benign context (like the example above where someone has devoured the whole carton of ice cream).

"Don't judge me" means they know there is something wrong, they are unattractive in some way, or are behaving badly. But they want you to ignore or forgive it.

I agree I don't think most people use it in a serious manner. I might be talking to friends telling them about my weekend in my pjs watching bad movies eating junk and not leaving my house and say "don't judge me" we laugh about it and that's it.
