Haydn Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Trainers, not for sport but expensive and usually designer. Look the 'dogs bollocks', with the right apparel. Question for the (i think) Europeans: What the heck are "trainers"? Do you mean running shoes? tyia 1
Haydn Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Sneakers sounds slightly sinister. My daughter had training nappies once, but now she has her own addidas trim tram (red) Trainers are people that help other people work out...Or diapers for your kid when he/she isnt quite potty trained... SNEAKERS!!!! TFY 1
Haydn Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 We have no idea what each other are talking about in the UK. But trolley for me but wait, also if your trollied you are drunk, very drunk. Smashed, steaming, wankered. The list goes on. This reminds me of the regional 'English' lists on YouTube Different geographic areas...what's the thing you use at the grocery store called....shopping cart, buggy, trolley, push cart What's the general term for a carbonated drink called....pop, soda, soda pop, coke, fizzy water.
EasyHeart Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 That depends. By running shoes, do you mean trainers? Talk English, dammit!!! What's the general term for a carbonated drink called....pop, soda, soda pop, coke, fizzy water.Pop. Duh. Soda has ice cream in it. Coke is a brand name. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLES??? 1
EasyHeart Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Trainers, not for sport but expensive and usually designer. Look the 'dogs bollocks', with the right apparel. I have a pair of shoes kind of like this: http://www.37puma.com/images/Puma-Repli-Cat-III-Suede-Shoes-Brown-White-l.jpg Are they trainers? And not to be dense, but is "dogs bollocks" a good thing????
hasaquestion Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Shorts and a long-sleeve button down? That sounds ridiculous. That's what I was thinking. Though my mom was trying to suggest I would like nicer in shorts if I wore a short-sleeve button down. It seems like the best answer is to just stick to t-shirts. Nooooooooooooooooooooooo. No T-shirts! It looks really sloppy unless you're 1) still in high school or 2) have enough muscle that the fit accentuates your physique. The point isn't to wear a long sleeves with shorts, its to roll up the sleeves. Its a great look, sophisticated and casual at the same time, both natural and neat. Not only that, you save money because the same shirt can be worn in winter with the sleeves out and a sweater or cardigan over the top. You can still look good in a shirt and shorts. The key is to wear the right shirt and the right shorts. Neat should always be your goal. There's two ways to look good. Look neat, or look artfully sloppy. The dress equivalent of Buzz Lightyear's "falling with style". Most people .can't pull off artfully sloppy. They just end up looking sloppy. When the sun comes out get a pair of Sperrys, some chino shorts that fit and two or three versatile shirts and you're in business.
Taramere Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Sneakers sounds slightly sinister. They do. I picture a burglar sneaking in, quiet as a cat thanks to their trainers/sneakers/burglingshoes. That reminds me. Remember brothel creepers? Now there's a name for shoes! What's the general term for a carbonated drink called....pop, soda, soda pop, coke, fizzy water. It used to be pop, I think, but that's out of fashion now. "We had a picnic and by gosh, we had lashings of pop and it was all frightfully good sport." Now, in a restaurant, they'd tend to ask "still or sparkling?" Otherwise you would just tend to ask for the brand. One which possibly causes confusion is lemonade. In the UK, lemonade is what I think you'd call lemon soda. But just to add confusion, there's always the possibility that it's a home made thing made out of real lemons (which, I understand, is what lemonade is taken to generally be in the US). 1
Taramere Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Talk English, dammit!!! Too right, I do. However, over time I'm becoming bi-lingual. Last time I was in NYC I remembered to refer to the pavement as a sidewalk.

The thought of a sweater or cardigan over a long sleeve button down makes me want to collapse from heat exhaustion. Obviously you and I have different views of fashion.
somedude81 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Talk English, dammit!!! Pop. Duh. Soda has ice cream in it. Coke is a brand name. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLES??? Completely off-topic: After the United States kicked the Brits out of America two hundred years ago, the language they spoke should have been renamed to American. BTW, soda with ice cream in it is called a "float" as in Root Beer float or Coke float
Haydn Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 You mean when the Brits kicked themselves out with the help of those pesky French. Who doubtless brought there own fashion. How can you rename a language, most former colonies speak English. But they are devilishly fashionable for the experience. Are you a chav by any chance? Fair enough on the versatility not being useful. But at the end of the day you've got to look neat if you want to present yourself best. A well-chosen pair of shorts (not jean shorts, cargo shorts or gym shorts), well-chosen shoes, and a nice shirt accomplishes that. Flip flops and a T-shirt are a surfer look. If you want to go for a surfer look, you have to look like a surfer first. I know I don't so I don't try.
EasyHeart Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 In parts of the South, Coke means generic soda pop. Would you like a Coke? Yes please. Then they will ask...what type?...Dr Pepper, Mountain Due, etc. In the rest of the USA, Coke means a cola drink.. Coca Cola, Pepsi, etc.I know, but they are wrong.

It's a five minute drive to the beach from my apartment. I also have a surfboard, but I suck at using it I don't really go for the surfer look, but it's pretty much accepted where I live. Virtually everybody wears shorts. I have shorts of different styles and I try to wear matching shoes and shirts. I also spend most of my day on my college campus.
EasyHeart Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 You mean when the Brits kicked themselves out with the help of those pesky French. Who doubtless brought there own fashion. The French didn't help that much. I mean, c'mon. . . they're French. Mostly they just ran away or surrendered. 2

The shirt in that pic doesn't look quite the same as what I've got. Different fabric maybe? 1
