somedude81 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I live in SoCal and because of the temperature, I'm pretty much in shorts 95% of the year during the day. One thing I'm not sure about is what kind of shirts I should wear with shorts. Am I fine in a t-shirt or should I go with a button up, short sleeve shirt with my shorts?
normal person Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 2 pairs of cargo shorts Everyone's got different opinions, but I think there's a bit of a stigma towards grown men wearing shorts; it makes them look like childish. Cargo shorts especially are bulkier and cumbersome. Ideally you want to slim, not enlarge. Slim, tailored, and defined is flattering. Extra bulky fabric hanging off you doesn't make you look more muscular, it just makes you look like an amorphous blob. Unless the heat is absolutely unbearable I'd personally opt for pants. I think they're a lot more dignified. If you're that concerned with it you could post some pictures, OP. Crop your face out if you want. Saying "I bought 4 polo shirts" doesn't really take if people can't see it all in context, y'know? Good luck. 1

Men wearing pants is the minority in the Summer where I'm at. I wouldn't wear shorts out on a date or on a planned night out. Conversely, I'm not wearing pants if I'm going disc-golfing or drinking at a bonfire. 2
gaius Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I can never find shorts I like so I wear jeans all year. Even down in Florida in August. If I really like a woman I'll take her to the nicest restaurant I can find. That doesn't have a dresscode. I don't like pants, they only come out for formal meetings and jury duty. 1
Under The Radar Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I only wear tighty whities, sans pants, when summoned to jury duty. ...... It gets me out of that civil responsibility pretty fast . 1
thefooloftheyear Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 One thing I will never understand about guys is this fascination with flip/flops...Every damn guy around here wears them..*shrug* They look stupid, offer no support,. and most guys(people) have ugly feet, their toenails look like a badgers, etc...Gotta be a huge turnoff to women...At least if you are going to wear them, skip the socks, trim your toenails and shave!!.... TFY 1
Under The Radar Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Nothing worse than a beautiful woman with unkempt toenails. Odds are she can catch a salmon going upstream with those eagle's claws. LOL 1

EasyHeart Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I'll be interested to hear other takes on this one. Men wearing pants is the minority in the Summer where I'm at. I wouldn't wear shorts out on a date or on a planned night out. Conversely, I'm not wearing pants if I'm going disc-golfing or drinking at a bonfire. I wear shorts all the time (not to work, of course) and so do most men where I live. We have a lot of outdoor events and festivals (and most of the bars have outdoor seating) and pretty much all the younger men are going to be in shorts. If you wore tailored dress pants to a bar, you might as well tie a pink sweater around your neck. The only thing wrong with cargo shorts is that they were trendy a few years ago, so now everyone "knows" that cargo shorts are gauche and no one should ever wear them. Slim, tailored pants look good on men who have skinny legs. If you have any muscle on your thighs, your legs will look like sausages and you'll look silly because you have 6 extra inches of fabric at your waist. That's why it's important to try on lots of different styles and figure out what looks good (and what is comfortable) on your particular body type. If you have skinny, hairless legs, cover those things up; if you have nice hairy, muscular legs show off those bad boys!!! The trend in men's fashion right now is the androgynous look -- taking away emphasis from the chest/shoulders and hips/thighs that give men a male silhouette. That style of clothing looks good on men who don't have broad shoulders or muscular legs; they look silly on men who have a more masculine build. I think it's much better to find clothes that look good on your body, rather then jump on whatever trend the fashionistas are cackling about this year. Remember that the fashion industry's goal is not to make you look good; it's to make you buy new clothes every year. I live in SoCal and because of the temperature, I'm pretty much in shorts 95% of the year during the day. I hate you. One thing I'm not sure about is what kind of shirts I should wear with shorts. Am I fine in a t-shirt or should I go with a button up, short sleeve shirt with my shorts?Short-sleeved dress shirts are an abomination. It's almost impossible for a man to look good in them. I think it would be better to dress up your shorts with a nice polo shirt, or even a long-sleeved buttondown. 2
Haydn Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 In southern Europe at the moment on the Med. Hot. Wearing. Cut off mustangs jeans, (white) skinny slightly above the knee. lacoste high tops trainers. Chelsea white away top. Two people have already asked me if i was in the Bicardi advert.

I wouldn't wear shorts out on a date or on a planned night out. Conversely, I'm not wearing pants if I'm going disc-golfing or drinking at a bonfire. Personally, out of all shorts on men I prefer cargo/combat shorts (khaki or cream) and relaxed looking...scruffy looking even! (but then I wear combats and the odd band t-shirt myself quite often) SomedudeI think shorts always look better with a t-shirt or a polo shirt but not a button through shirt as it can look a bit 'little boy-ish'. I prefer untucked t-shirts and shirts but a button through shirt should be a nice fit. I think untucked looks better if there is a tummy sitting above a waistband. White or black long sleeved button shirt and blue jeans is always good. Suits are fine for work but OTT for a date for me. Things I really don't like are skinny jeans (just wrong unless a guy is really young and dressing for his peers) and sweatpants. A friend of mine went on a date recently. She wore a summer dress and he wore sweatpants and a creased t-shirt with egg on it. One tip for creased t-shirts: Get a steam iron and hang the t-shirt on a smooth edged hanger (one of those hangers with rounded smooth shoulders which don't indent into your clothes) then hold it up and steam the t-shirt out rather than try to iron it.

Els Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Ladies? What say you? Middle aged guy in a bar/grocery/bookstore in suit and tie? Definite no for me. I really enjoy seeing the SO in a suit (and cufflinks! )... but at a suitable occasion. A play or a fine dining restaurant or such... definitely not the bar/grocery/bookstore. Then again I do live in a place with very casual dress code - most people don't wear suits to work (and the few who do, don't need to go grocery shopping after work...). If you really want to 'dress up' then just go with a long-sleeved shirt and dark slacks IMO. Not as 'formal' as a suit but nicer than a concert tee.

Els Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Tucked or no? I'd probably go with untucked if you're not going to work.
Author Mr Scorpio Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 I'd probably go with untucked if you're not going to work. What about say slacks or dark jeans with a plain, solid color t-shirt (black or white) and dress shirt on top?
Els Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 What about say slacks or dark jeans with a plain, solid color t-shirt (black or white) and dress shirt on top? You mean dress shirt on top of the t-shirt? I'm not really a fashion person myself (so I don't know if this is a new trend), but I only ever saw guys doing that in school. I suppose it would look a bit young to me, since I rarely see adult guys wear it like that. I'd say go with the t-shirt or the dress shirt, not both...
normal person Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 What about say slacks or dark jeans with a plain, solid color t-shirt (black or white) and dress shirt on top? Personal opinions: Dark, well fitting jeans look good on just about everyone. The mere mention of the word "slacks" makes me think of a middle aged guy who doesn't want to walk to the other end of the mall so he just grabbed the first thing on the rack at JCPenny. It sounds like standard issue, vanilla, wholesome, real estate agent attire. There's nothing fun or sexy about them and at 34, you're not entirely removed from youth culture. At your age I don't think you have to go down that road just yet. No pleats or cuffs. Solid white or black t shirts are great assuming they fit well and they're appropriate for the situation. However, if you're wearing a somewhat transparent white dress shirt over it, consider switching the undershirt to grey. Grey is a closer match your skin tone than harsh white or black so it won't show through your dress shirt, which looks really odd. If you can find undershirts even closer to your skin tone then that's even better, they'll show even less.

Shepp Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 But slacky shirts and formal clothes can be mixed and matched. Trainers with a suit, no problem, had a mate who wore a very expensive suit at his wedding with a pair of Puma Europe. I intend to wear trainers to my wedding!! My mum was pretty unimpressed by that revolution! 2
EasyHeart Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Question for the (i think) Europeans: What the heck are "trainers"? Do you mean running shoes? tyia
Taramere Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Question for the (i think) Europeans: What the heck are "trainers"? Do you mean running shoes? tyia That depends. By running shoes, do you mean trainers? 1

thefooloftheyear Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Trainers are people that help other people work out...Or diapers for your kid when he/she isnt quite potty trained... SNEAKERS!!!! TFY

Though my mom was trying to suggest I would like nicer in shorts if I wore a short-sleeve button down. It seems like the best answer is to just stick to t-shirts.
