pink_sugar Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 So, I know there was a similar thread about Mothers day, but I was wondering everyone's thoughts about gift giving. These "holidays" are basically just for businesses to make money and it really should be about appreciating your folks. I think these days, like Valentine's, are way too hyped up. My dad basically demanded me to drive 2.5 hours down to see him after being in the area the we ek before and demanded that I buy him a gift to take him out. This sort of thing makes me NOT want to do a thing for him.
gaius Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 My mother and father are delinquent but I try to at least take my grandmother out for lunch on mothers day. You can argue about the commercial aspect of the holiday all you want but at the end of the day you still have a relative who's not being honored while others around them of equal stature are. Which would bother and hurt a normal person a little bit. You should probably do something unless you have a good reason not to. (Ie never met your father) 1
jbelle6 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I'm opposite! I will take any and every single excuse to celebrate that I can! Valentine's is my most favorite!!! I don't just use it to celebrate romantic love but all love, I get Valentine's for my son, my friends, my boyfriend if I have one at the time etc etc. Life is short so I will take any reason to make it fun, and I like making people happy, not with expensive gifts but ones that show I'm thinking of them. 1
Author pink_sugar Posted June 16, 2014 Author Posted June 16, 2014 It's not that I think people shouldn't gift give, but it is big businesses that are the ones who say you NEED to get your girlfriend or mom a diamond necklace for Mother's Day or Valentines. The focus of these days is materialistic, rather than the concept of spending time with one another and showing appreciation. So people think they NEED to spend a ton of money on a gift.
