I've been reading about all the wonderful chemicals that can leach into water via plastic bottles. While some companies claim that their bottles are BPA free -- and therefore safe -- other companies claim that all plastics emit some naughty chemicals. Glass bottles are safe, but so puny.

Has anyone worked out personal solutions to this dire issue?

Drink beer out of glass bottles. It has everything the body needs ;)

Seriously, I've never been much of a bottled water drinker. I've got a couple of vacuum cool cups made out of stainless and I've been drinking my own well water for about 26 years now. I know when I fly and they serve us water out of those big plastic bottles it always tastes funny, to me anyway. So, instead, I drink gin and tonics :)

So, my 'safe' water bottle looks something like this

If you're really worried about contaminants in plastic, use either glass or stainless steel.

If you're using it during exercise, that may not be practical. But I seriously doubt any horrible chemicals are going to leech out of the plastic during the hour or so that you're working out. It takes time and temperature for anything to leech out of the plastic, so filling up a plastic squeeze bottle when you go to gym is not going to raise any health concerns. (OTH, if you keep a bottle of water in your car that may sit there for a month in the sun, use steel or glass)

Don't buy bottled water. Most of the time its nothing more than tap water anyway.

If you're truly concerned, use a good chemical filter on your own tap water, and drink it from either stainless steel water bottles, or risk the "BPA-free Nalgene" bottles.

Not only will you end up with better water, you'll use far less of those one time use water bottles from the store.

I use nalgene bottles all the time for backpacking/hiking/camping. I use two water filters when camping...one (Sawyer Mini) is for removing biological contaminants, and the other improves tastes and removes some amount of chemicals (carbon water filter).
