Just wondering if anyone has any experience dating a chef? I just started but he works most weekends..his hours might make it tough to be in a serious relationship??

I've worked with chefs for the past 9 years. Don't make plans for holidays or weekends and expect long work days. They can also be a bit rough around the edges. Just comes with the territory.

Never dated but my friend was one and her hours were insane. Ditto on the holidays etc.

She ended up dating someone who was also in hospitality since other people had trouble with those aspects.

lol I guess you'll never be in a serious relationship with a chef then.

hahahaha sounds so childish.

???????????

Conflicting work hours can cause many difficulties. This doesn't sound like it's his part time job, it sounds like his career. How is it childish to not look at potential conflicts early?

I would not want to be with someone that works 6-3am for instance.

Having to uproot my whole schedule to make time to see someone seems like something to think of, childish to think otherwise. I work usually between 9 and 6. And I have a child. If someone did not start till the dinner shift they would be leaving as soon as I get home, and going to bed as soon as I have to leave for work, or an hour or two before.

Yes. My ex-fiance of 8 years is a chef. His work schedule unfortunately caused serious problems for us. He was almost never available weekends, evenings or holidays. Be prepared to spend many of those alone. A kitchen is also quite a high-stress environment, which can take a real toll on the person and ultimately their loved ones. In our case, it simply didn't work out.

I haven't dated a chef...I could imagine the hours might be challenging.

But think of the food!

Plus, it's like many professions (doctors, firemen, EMTs, etc.) -- with seniority comes flexibility. It might not be that bad forever.

I've never dated one, but a friend of mine (female!) is a chef.

The hours apparently aren't so much 'long' (or at least not much longer than most other professions) as they are 'odd'. So if you have a regular 9-5 job, your hours will end up being polar opposites, and that might be problematic.

If you have more flexibility with your own hours then it might be easier, but otherwise it's gonna be a rough ride IMO.

It also depends on the restaurant, but some of ours are typically only open 5p-10p. These chefs come in at noon to do inventory, scheduling, prep, meetings, and then can be there until after midnight. Sometimes the restaurants open extra days and they can go two weeks without a day off. Holidays can bring 14 hour work days. On top of that, because of their career, many have told me they don't like to cook at home. The majority of the chefs I work with tend to date other chefs because they understand the lifestyle and demands.
