datingnoob93 Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I met this girl 2 weeks ago, got her number, took her out, had a great time and made out but no sex. We made plans to see each other again. Then she suddenly responding to my texts last week. I didn't care too much because I'm used to rejection after the first date, but just out of curiosity, I decided to find her on facebook and message her to say hi. Her name is not unusual, but she told me so many things about herself, hometown, high school, college, etc, that I figured I'd find her quickly. I couldn't find anything. I couldn't believe it. She looks and acts like a popular girl with lots of friends. But no FB ? I don't mean to act creepy, but the curiosity was eating at me. I tried the campus directory. Nothing. Googled her name. Nothing. White pages.com, people finders.com.... absolutely nothing! Its like this person simply does not exist. So what happened? Did I get trolled in real life by somebody who made up everything about themselves, and is having a laugh at my expense ??? I'm confused.
MidwestUSA Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I know several people who use fake names on Facebook. Few people (especially younger) have a listed number with white pages anymore, due to cell phones. Younger people tend to not show up on the 'people finder' sites. Those are based on history - mailing addresses, court records, utility bills, occupancy permits, etc. Not sure about the campus directory tho. Maybe she goes by a different last name than what she gave you? Did you try back tracing her phone number (altho cell phones aren't usually listed). Are court records available online in your area? I run everyone I meet thru our statewide court system. Maybe she did indeed give you a fake name, in case the date was a bust. Who knows? 1
Gaeta Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 It's not so hard to believe. I dated a man for a year and he was completely incognito on the Web. No FB, or other social media, he was only using his unlisted cell number so no home address appeared online. I thought he was kind of lucky. I google my name and my entire life is online!! My office, my home address, the things I have for sale on kijiji, my FB, every membership I have, it's crazy, any stranger I meet can come to my door. That is why I never give my last name to new dates.
rester Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I've remained completely incognito on the internet, and I have a Facebook page as well as a couple other accounts that I keep very private. I know many others that do, too. I don't believe it's as uncommon as one might think. 1
jbelle6 Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 You can set your privacy on Facebook so that people can't search you, or at least you used to be able to. So that is not weird. 1
writergal Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 I grew up in the Midwest where "trolling" referred to what fishermen do...to fish with a hook and line pulled through the water..."trolling for Walleye/Trout." Online trolling's so prevalent now its got a definition on WikiPedia, a show on MTV "Catfished," an urban dictionary reference and countless memes. Everyone gets trolled at some point. There's no way to avoid it unfortunately. Slate has a good article on internet trolling and I agree with its title: Internet Trolls Really Are Horrible People. Internet troll personality study: Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, sadism.
