This has probably been posted here before, but since I am relatively new I will ask anyway:

What do you think is the largest gap in age that would be sustainable in a relationship?

It really depends on the person -- every person will have a different point of view about this topic.

There are people who can sustain big gaps in terms of age.

I personally like being with someone who's more or less in the same age range as me -- only because I like going through the same life experiences as him.

It depends on the age. The older it is the less the age gap matters. My grandparents were 8 years apart and they had the most solid relationship I've ever seen.

However I feel that long term relations should be plus or minus 5 years as a general rule (there are exceptions to every rule)

Depends on the people.

I think that as the age gap between potential partners increases, then (all other things being equal) it becomes progressively less likely the relationship will be a successful match between equals.

However, I also think in real life, all other things are never equal. Everyone is different, and there is no magic cut off where the certain age gap determines that a relationship will or won't work.

At the end of the day, age can present some practical problems in a relationship, but there are many, many other important qualities in both partners that also influence whether a relationship survives or fails.
