with someone who broke their heart and dumped them???

I know the "lets just be friends" line is pretty much the most common breakup line in the book. I also know that the majority of dumpers dont literally mean it, they dont actually want to keep seeing you and hanging out with you as a 'friend', it is usually just (what they think is) a polite way of saying "have a nice life".

but occasionally I have heard stories, even from people on this board, about dumpees who got contacted by the dumper years on and they formed a friendship.

they never really elaborate but I believe a 'friend' is someone you see on a regular basis, have similar interests with, chat to a lot and generally catch up with and keep in contact with on a regular basis.

when I asked these people if they do that with their dumper they responded with something like "no, but she did email me two years after dumping me and we chatted then for twenty minutes and she wished me all the best... see, we are friends!"

my response is... THAT IS NOT A FRIENDSHIP.

A true friend is someone you see and catch up with regularly, text regularly and generally hang out and remain supportive of each other in a no-strings-attached manner.

it is not someone you say "hi" to every six months!

so... has anyone here ever managed to have a TRUE friendship with the dumper, post-break-up?? a true friendship where you REGULARLY see each other and catch up, not just an email twice a year???

how'd it go?
