Been dating a guy for about 6 weeks now. We've both said it's not just about the sex, but it's still really casual. We never talk about feelings or anything, and I'm not sure how he actually feels about me. I do like him a lot though.

It's his birthday in a couple of weekends, and I was wondering if I should do/ get him anything? He won't actually be here for it as he's away with work, so if I did it would have to be the next week. Any advice? Thank you

Early dating : No present, cook him a nice dinner for his birthday, that's it. If you're not into cooking take him out to dinner.

Take him out to dinner. Since it's casual, no present.

Ok cool, thanks! What kind of place do you think? Like a nice restaurant or somewhere a bit less fancy? (I swear I do think for myself sometimes :p ). It might have to be mid-week if that makes any difference?

not super fancy as that's a bit much, but too casual or cheap says you don't really care. I always prefer to go the route of some place new and interesting, say a Mongolian BBQ or a theme restaurant..so it's about the experience as well as food and it's a kind of adventure that the two of you have shared. Give him a little culinary adventure for his birthday.

What's your "restaurant history" to date? Fancy, cheap, what? I'd keep it nice, casual, not a sport coat required kind of thing. Maybe step it up one notch if you want to. Or even just a simple card, nothing mushy.

I would get him a card.

I like presents -- giving & getting -- so I would probably get him something small like a CD, a bottle of his favorite drink, a funny t-shirt etc. I wouldn't spend more than $20.

taking him out to dinner or baking him something is also a good idea.

Yeah I wouldn't get him a big gift or anything. Take him to his fave restaurant, even better - MAKE his fave meal (provided you can cook), get him a nice card and if you feel like he should get a little something, maybe some of his fave candy or chocolates or something, just to show you pay attention! Nothing major, don't go overboard!
