Haydn Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 For one week now my daughters stools have been very pale. I took to her doctor whom i respect a great deal. She said give it a few days it could be a virus or the liver doing something (No idea what). Took her back to today. And we are off for a battery of tests in the morning. I have checked with my daughters mother about diet etc..(As we are apart). Nothing out of the ordinary just an uptake in bio foods. We give no supplements as she eats almost everything. She has not complained of pain etc and is not off her food, any other ideas before the hospital? She is the picture of health.
MidwestUSA Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Oh, poo! Right up my alley! I will bet that before you get the test results back, if not sooner, everything will be back to normal. I think the amount of bile excreted by the liver does have an impact on stool color. How old is your daughter? What is a bio food?
Author Haydn Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 Bio is organic, you are probably right. She has a nasty habit of scarring me half to death sometimes. Thank god for terrible distractions. I am no stool expert but they are so pale. No colour at all. The hospital will n doubt confirm its nothing. Her mother feeds her an almost vegetarian diet, where i am the eat anything which drips down your chin `dad`. Seems to have worked for years with no problems.
Grumpybutfun Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 If the stool looks like clay, she could have trouble with the drainage of her biliary system which is comprised of her pancreas and liver and gallbladder. Is she taking ibuprofen, Naproxen, steroids, or antibiotics? These can turn stool pale or clay colored in children. However, if all of this is negative, then I suggest you look at more simple reasons. My daughter kept getting nosebleeds when she was eight. We took her to Pediatricians, Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists, Oncologists, etc. trying to figure out what was going on. Finally I called my old family doctor who is incredibly wise..you know the old grey dog who knows it all due to experience, and he said....son, she is picking her nose and too ashamed to tell you. We asked her again and asked her directly if she was picking her nose a lot. This was the exact reason so look at common, simple reasons for pale stool if you have already had all the tests done...she is probably lacking some nutrient she needs from the all veggie diet or she is eating too much sugar or drinking too much pop. We had a kid like that...we fed him well, but he would sneak high sugary snacks and pop and hide it. He lived on Mountain Dew and cookies the first year he moved away from us tyrannical parents...and got stomach aches and cramps. Best, Grumps 1
MidwestUSA Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Ah, one other thing, some meds can turn the stool pale. Pepto bismol is one; altho I doubt it's your culprit. I would also like to take this moment to plug the Bristol stool chart; great light internet browsing for all of your consistency issues. . Maybe there's one for poo color too? 1
FitChick Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 We give no supplements as she eats almost everything. No she doesn't, she is a vegetarian. She should take supplements because, unless your wife is a licensed dietician, your daughter isn't getting everything a growing child needs. Key nutrients are missing, like taurine or various B vitamins. When she's with you alone, take her out for a chicken dinner or cheese omelet or fish and chips. 2
Author Haydn Posted April 11, 2014 Author Posted April 11, 2014 Thank you all for your kind and descriptive replies. The poo chart has got me checking MId, one more thing to worry about! Grumps the old dr approach always worked for me. Fitchick the trip for chicken and chips is scheduled today.
Arieswoman Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Fitchick, No she doesn't, she is a vegetarian. Key nutrients are missing, like taurine or various B vitamins. That is not necessarily correct. A veggie diet has to be balanced like any other. Humans don't need taurine as we are omnivores, as are dogs. Cats, however, need taurine because they are carnivores. Vegetarian Diets-How can vegetarians eat a balanced diet? FitChick Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Humans don't need taurine as we are omnivores, as are dogs. Not according to this latest research. Vegetarians tend to be more anxious and depressed than omnivores so the lack of taurine might explain it. Take a supplement if you don't want to eat food that contains it. Easy fix!
whichwayisup Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Did they do a poo smear test for your daughter? That's a sure way (as well as some blood tests) to find out what is going on. Hope all sorts itself out soon and whatever it is, isn't serious. 1
Author Haydn Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 we have had all the tests come back negative. Liver blood work all normal. Still whitish stools. Slightly runny. The consultant suspects norovirus. But no vomiting. Suggested see how the weekend is. Giving her normafler and dark chocolate! Still fit as a fiddle.
MidwestUSA Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 That's some yucky stuff; I'm surprised that's her only symptom. Contagious! Be careful. What's normafler?
Arieswoman Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Fitchick, Adults can produce taurine by a combination of cysteine with the help of pyridoxine = B6, methionine and vitamin C. Cysteine is found in red peppers, garlic, onions, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, oats, granola and wheat germs. B6 in whole grain products, vegetables, and nuts. High levels of methionine can be found in sesame seeds, Brazil nuts and some other plant seeds. Significant amounts can be found in spinach, potatoes, and boiled corn. 1
Author Haydn Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 I find that strange as well, she had norovirus last year and it was hell. Vomiting and non stop liquid. She spent a week in hospital being re-hydrated. Normafler is a kind of glucose which they give to kids but adults take well, non presription stuff. I got her on dry foods today. I am not a Doctor but i don`t think its Noro. Ive had it and remember how nasty it can be. I guessing because her results are good they would rather wait. You wouldn`t believe there was anything wrong with her, she is racing around the balcony in full bike mode. But i am soaking quite a few pairs of small knickers. When a fart becomes more....But first sign of anything more serious, straight to the childrens hosptial. That's some yucky stuff; I'm surprised that's her only symptom. Contagious! Be careful. What's normafler?

That would have shown up in the samples and in her blood. And, she'd be pooping much more and feeling awful. And, it's very contagious, you and her mom would be sick as well.
