I've been living in this apartment for almost 3 years, and I'm just now getting to the point where living with my roommate is unbearable. I'm moving out in 3 months and really don't think I'll make it.

I'm 21, and she's almost 24, but she acts like a child. I feel like she really does believe the world revolves around her. When I first moved in, she was laid back and fun, but now she's anything but. She's that one roommate who leaves notes around the apartment and texts me when she's mad. She binges when she goes to the bar, and there are times that she's been lying on the kitchen floor with no pants on, and I've had to dress her and get her to bed. She has a dog that she keeps in a cage when she goes to class, and it barks for hours. The dog has woken me up daily without fail, and when I told my roommate she needed to figure something out, she told me to "go buy a bark collar myself." She even locked her bedroom door once to ensure that I couldn't go in her room and make the dog stop barking. Lately, this is how the apartment situation is playing out..

My roommate moved out of the apartment to be with her boyfriend last semester. I can count on one hand how many times I've seen her since last summer. She still pays rent, but that's only because the contract is binding, and she has to. In January, my best friend went through an awful breakup where she had to break a lease and had nowhere to live. I told her she could come crash on my couch for a few days. My best friend ran into my roommate, who told her she didn't live at the apartment anymore, so my best friend was welcome to stay in her room. We've been working with the arrangement until I get out of this place and my friend and I can have a place of our own. Even though that agreement was made, my roommate still calls the shots and manages to make our lives miserable. She told me she didn't care if our place got messy, but she'll text me randomly saying the apartment is "freaking trashed." That I could maybe work with. She texted me saying she wasn't going to pay the electric bill anymore because she wasn't living at the apartment (even though the lease says she has to). That I could work with. She texted me saying that HER best friend is going to be living in our apartment for the entire summer, which is something I don't agree to and don't want. Last night, my friend was in my roommate's room, and at 4 in the morning, my roommate came to the apartment and told my friend she had to leave because my roommate and her boyfriend were fighting, so she's going to come back and live here now. I came home from class today to hear the familiar sound of a dog in a cage barking for hours, and this is my breaking point. I'm trying to figure out what to do here and am at the point that I just want to go and live back at home.

Your story was a little confusing. Feel free to correct my misunderstandings.

It sounds as though your roommate moved out but still pays rent for her room. Since her room was empty, you moved your friend in, right? Then the roommate came home and told your friend to get out of her room? Roommate was right. Your friend has no right to be in roommate's room.

As long as roommate is paying her half, you've got to leave her room alone as if she's still living there.

get a new mobile, leave the old one lying around so that she sees it is defunct, if she asks, tell her your new number is private, that the texts on the old mobile were too intrusive or a nuisance, shut her up and out at least somewhat

make an anonymous report to the authorities about the dog noise, anonymous to protect yourself from her

I detest animal abuse - the dog is distressed hence the barking all the time, no happy dog does that - the room-mate is srsly horrible,
