my wife is currently in jail for the next five months for a money crime. I might get a lot of flack for supporting a criminal but since she has no history of this and her crime wasn't against me or our child so I am willing to stick by her. I was wondering what are some good books or magazines out that are good to send to an inmate.

, I honestly don't read much and I was thinking maybe there were some good specific books you can send to someone in jail. She's 35 if that helps . Don't even know what books are targeted toward that age group

The types not allowed are things inciting racial hatred, rioting, making drugs, violence or escaping from jail but that's nothing to worry about she would never read that kind of stuff anyway

main thing I wonder if there are some good specific books or magazines for someone in jail. And also maybe what kind of books or magazines would not be a good idea

How about you just ask her? Surely after however many years of marriage you have an idea as to your wife's interests? :\ Failing that, checking out bestseller lists can't exactly hurt as they're clearly books that are popular with a large section of the population. But yeah, I'd ask.

Eckert Tolle has many get books on finding purpose, taking responsitility.

Viktor Frankel- "Mans search for meaning" is a wonderful book (sad) about finding the purpose in your life. This should be your wifes goal finding the why of the decisions she made and taking responsibility for her actions and the consequences. She has a choice to make this time worthwhile a self exploration or spend 5 months being pissed off and blaming the "system for her woes" from experience those who take responsibiltiy for their actions own the consequences and search for ways to make better decisions in her future are the ones who successfully exit the "system" She may (or may not) have received a bad rap, either way it doesn't matter. She made choices which lead her to the consquences. Own the choices and she will emerge the victor.

She is safe and being given an opportunity to change. Send positive messages to her, no "home stresses" if possible. Its difficult for people to deal with the families stress when then have limited contact and no control.

Also, the women tend to love romance novels. rosemary rodgers.

I've worked as a counselor in the prison system. Your not wrong to support her. She has an opportunity to change. with support her chance of success is much greater. :)

I don't want to sound judgmental; I'm glad that you are supporting your wife. Also, I've never been through the scenario of having a close loved one behind bars. However, I don't understand why anyone would give you flack for supporting your wife in a difficult hour. So what if she is in prison for making bad decisions, she needs help... If her spouse will not support her, then who will? In my heart I believe that I would stand by my wife (in at least a support role) no matter what she did.

It's difficult to recommend a book without knowing her personality. However, a modern translation of the Bible would certainly be a good start. Minus the "thee" and "thou" lingo there are some really great stories in there. I recommend the New Living Translation.

If she would like a good romance story with a twist you might try Outlander which is a very popular time-travel romance book.

Does her prison allow the inmates to use e-reader devices? If so, then giving her a Kindle Paperwhite with some books/magazines loaded on it would reduce the amount of space necessary to store her things.

Anyhow, thanks for your post and I hope this helps. I've posted amazon.com links below to my recommendations.

She will have some type of jail canteen card that she can use to purchase things including snacks & amusements. Outside things even books & magazines are rarely allowed but if they are I'd suggest some puzzle books. You get them on magazine stands -- cross words, search a word etc.

just get her some "girly" magazines like glamour, cosmo, lucky, vogue, etc. you can start a subscription to some and always have new ones ready to take in. even if she's not religious she might enjoy a spiritual book/Bible - tons of people who go to jail end up becoming very faithful during and after their time inside.

Books by Paolo Coelho, Italo Calvino or Milan Kundera are engaging but leave much to reflect on too.

If she likes fun, start her on the Discworld series, by Terry Pratchett.

If non-fiction is more her thing, find a biography of someone she admires / is interested in, or something related to a hobby or interest she has.

Or something "worthy", like Demond & Mpho Tutu's book on Forgiveness, or Something by the Dalai Lama.

Also, if she's interested in crossword puzzles, sudoku or kakuro, those are great for passing the time.
