titman Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Hi, can you believe in the theory of evolution and be a christian at the same time? Just curious. Thank you.
pickflicker Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Hi, can you believe in the theory of evolution and be a christian at the same time? Just curious. Thank you. Pope John Paul II did.
somedude81 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Sure you can. Just believe that God had a guiding hand in having humans become what we are now. Without a doubt, humans are animals. But we are so much more than animals because of God's influence. God is eternal, and the few million years it took for humans to become what we are now, is nothing to Him. 1
todreaminblue Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 we evolved from apes.......so why are there still apes .....i have more problems with believing in the theory of evolution than i do believing in a god above......maybe its just me but i think you truly believe in one or the other...because they really are polarized ....creation or evolution...... 2
Author titman Posted March 26, 2014 Author Posted March 26, 2014 Wow, I didn't know the Pope John Paul did. Thank you. So if one can, how is one supposed to take what the bible says about Adam and Eve? Are all the denominations officially approving it? There are so many kinds of cats, and one evolved into puma, another into a cheetah and so on, and the same applies to fish (there are so many kinds) and apes, and so on. That's why there are still many kinds of apes other than us who are believed to have evolved from Australopithecus, a kind of an ape.

Most believe in some sort of evolution, whether guided by God or the plan God used to set up the rules which brings us to the present. A minority are bible literalist and believe every word in the Bible as translated into their language is true. So a day in the Genesis creation story is 24 hours and not an eon or age as most see it.

You do know there is more than one kind of ape right? Chimpanzees, orangutangs, gorillas, bonobos. All of them have a common ancestor and they look different form each other. Nobody would mistake a gorilla for an orangutang. Yet they all have things in common, that's how evolution works. Random thought, I didn't know what a bonobo looked like so I goggled it. Well, now I know that breasts aren't unique to humans. Wow, I didn't know the Pope John Paul did. Thank you. So if one can, how is one supposed to take what the bible says about Adam and Eve? Who said that Adam and Eve looked like we do now? Mainly though, I don't think it's correct to take the story of Adam and Eve too literally. The Bible says that Adam and Eve had two sons. Then Cain killed Able. So uh, how did humanity come into being with only three people? Did Adam and Eve have more kids? Who did those kids have sex with to make more kids? Either you take it literally and see that a whole lot of incest had to happen, or it was just a fable.

Evolution and Creationism are polar opposites - but you don't have to be a creationist to be a Christian and believing in the existance of (a) god certainly doesn't exclude evolution.

We did not evolve from apes but we have common ancestors. So the first thing to understand is that you don't understand how evolution worked or occurred. A proper introduction to the subject would probably go a long way. Next, why would you believe something that is entirely faith based, as is religion, as opposed to a well established, scientific fact? Edited March 26, 2014 by Robert Z 3

We actually share a common ancestor with apes....our DNA proves it so there's no belief necessary. We have the proof. Creation however is just a belief with zero evidence to substantiate it.
crederer Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Evolution does not disprove God it simply means that god created the world differently than they thought thousands of years ago. There are examples of evolution around us at all times. Different diseases and viruses are constantly changing and adapting. A number of insects and amphibians have demonstrated evolution in a quick period of time.
Author titman Posted March 26, 2014 Author Posted March 26, 2014 The Bible says that Adam and Eve had two sons. Then Cain killed Able. So uh, how did humanity come into being with only three people? Seems like it's healthier to take it as a fable. Thank you. Thanks to all the comments guys.

somedude81 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Actually it says they got it it on with different others outside the garden after their expulsion - not sure were they came from but that's the explanation. And a very vague explanation it is. Sure there had to be other people outside of the garden, but they were never mentioned. Maybe by the time Adam and Eve were doing their thing, humanity was already going on and those two people were a special case. There's also the story that Adam and Eve lived for at least a thousand years. So yeah... 1

That's how evolution works. Do you believe that humans are not mammals? That we are completely different from all life on Earth?

Either you take it literally and see that a whole lot of incest had to happen, or it was just a fable. BIBLE VERSES ABOUT HOW MANY CHILDREN DID ADAM AND EVE HAVE Adam lived for over 900 years. He had several sons and daughters. His first son was Cain, then Able, then Seth. Then subsequent children, both sons and daughters. In those hundreds of years, his children mated with their siblings and had offspring.
man_in_the_box Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Sure there had to be other people outside of the garden, but they were never mentioned. Yeah, they are: Later, Cain and his wife had a son named Enoch. At the time Cain was building a town, and so he named it Enoch after his son. Then Enoch had a son named Irad, who had a son named Mehujael, who had a son named Methushael, who had a son named Lamech Gen 4:17-18 It goes on after that with more people showing up and marrying Cains offspring - no clarification whether they are Adam's offspring otherwise. Maybe by the time Adam and Eve were doing their thing, humanity was already going on and those two people were a special case. Actually that makes a lot of sense if you want to stick to the Adam/Eve story but whatever. Back when I was still christian I already did not really understand why god cares what exactly you believe on how the earth came to exist. Which goes back to the OP: do you believe god cares that you believe in a literal bible? (I know some say yes but let's see what the OP thinks)

A theory in science is a well-documented, well-supported and well-substantiated explanation of natural phenomena. It's not an educated guess at all, or a stab in the dark. The theory of evolution has more evidence for it than gravity. No one ever argues that the theory of gravity is just a theory. You can choose to believe what you want. It doesn't change reality. We evolved. Evolution is the best explanation we have (and we have mountains of evidence to support it) of the diversity of life. We share something like 96% of our DNA with chimps, more or less. That right there is enough evidence on its own. Opinions don't change the facts. But the facts ought to change opinions. I get it. You want to believe some magical being created all of us, and set us humans apart from the animal kingdom. This is just not the reality. The reality is, that we are very much apart of the animal kingdom. We are related to every living thing, and to me, that is beautiful. We don't just share a common ancestor with apes, we are, in fact, apes. Of course, you can keep on not believing, as can a lot of people. It won't alter the reality at all. Truth does not require belief. 3

'The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.' - Neil deGrasse Tyson I honestly can't tell if you're joking or not. But I don't believe in God. But at the same time I don't think that the theory of evolution disproves god. It seems a lot of people cannot make that distinction.
