I was pretty timid getting to know this guy. He won me over after the 3rd date. We were slow to date it was already a month and a half since the first date. However, even after the first date we would talk online every single day. The third date we hooked up. It was very passionate and surreal. After that he was after me hard. (not sexually just romantically). Our last date, he met my friends. We went to dinner, movie, and a bar! It was a great time. He told me he had a lot of fun. We had an amazing night together and he thinks this is going to be a relationship but he needs it slow. (First warning sign).

Four days later, he has been messaging me less. He calls me to break it off. He says he's not ready for a relationship yet. He got out of a relationship less than four months ago with a girl he was living with. When I was dating him, he just moved out of his parents house.

We had a very honest conversation about it. He said he'd like to be friends but he's unsure about it. I also asked if he'd be willing to get back together in the future when he's ready for a relationship. He said yes. Though, he doesn't want me to expect it or wait for him. He even removed his online dating profile. ( I knew him from it ).

Right now we aren't talking. I really want to be friends. He was some one I really enjoyed talking to. I also still see a future in us. How do you know when its the right time to continue a relationship/friendship?

Easy! Friends most often dont' have strings attached. So Let me ask you, if you really wanted to be his "friend" , then clearly you are accepting that if he dates or even marries someone else, you would be 100% cool with it. Basically , do you understand what it takes to be a friend?

The foundation to most long term love affairs start with a regard/friendship. It doesn't stop there though. it grows....

I do know what it takes to be a friend. I've done it before. The last time it was a huge mistake because the other guy didn't. I know things will have to be pulled back and I know I can't have any expectations. I do know right now I do have expectations and I have to move on a bit first. Should I wait for him to contact me when I'm ready... Or just send a peaceful hello when I'm ready...
