RowanRavyn Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Tomorrow at 12:45 my daughter has a doctors appointment. Girls in our family develop early. Yes, as early as eight. My daughter has a lump behind her right nipple. She was complaining about pain today and showed me. I was shocked. She has always had a little 'bump" (tiny tiny) but they have always said its not a big deal. Now suddenly this thing is about the size of my pinky nail, and painful.
moimeme Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Could just be one of those achy gland things. Good to see about it but don't worry too much.
RowanRavyn Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Logically I KNOW that, but logic is not the ruling factor now that she is tucked into bed and I am alone in the living room.
quankanne Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 off the top of my head, from discussions with female family members: -- does fibrous or dense breast tissue run in your family? -- does she drink caffeinated drinks? that can cause harmless cysts, docs usually tell patients to lay off the caffeine. Rowan, I'm praying this is something minor; keep us updated, okay? hugs, quank
RowanRavyn Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 No caffine (only special occassions for soda or caffinated tea). We have a family history of breast cancer, and I am not willing to go there yet, I mean she is only eight, but at eight the kid fills out an A cup very well.
quankanne Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 if she's already budding, it might could be the dense breast tissue thing or even a pectoral muscle doing something funky. does she know if it's free-floating or attached?
RowanRavyn Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 It doesn't move around, but it doesn't feel like everything else there. We talked about breast self exams today. (which she has seen me doing since she was an infant.)
quankanne Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I know this must be driving you wild, but promise yourself that you won't let yourself go nuts until it's absolutely, positively time to do so, okay?
HokeyReligions Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Oh Row! I know one of the hardest things for me as a parent was the "what if'ing" when the kids were sick. You are a survivor so if it does turn out to be the worst thing (I betcha it won't though) you KNOW that she will be OK and together you will fight it. I'll bet its like Quank said and dense tissue or a cyst. I'm glad you are getting it checked out. Try not to worry -- there will time for that later if its necessary. More than likely you won't need to worry at all. The two of you need an ice cream treat afterwards -- lots of hot fudge sauce!
RowanRavyn Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 So, my poor daughter has had her privacy so invaded today. Apparently this is something akin to fibrocystic disease. Spurred by her sudden surge of hormones. Nerve wracking, but happy ending.
einahpets Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 i was getting more and more nervous for you as i was reading your post ! i am so glad everything is okay. what are they doing about the lump?
RowanRavyn Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 We are watching it, if it continues to be painful then we will have to look at having it removed. It was utterly nerve wrecking! Thank you all for your thoughts.
moimeme Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 The painful ones might hurt for quite a while, but they go away.
RowanRavyn Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 She looked at the doctor and said, "Being a girl is so complicated!" The doctor said, "Just wait honey, just wait"
moimeme Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 The doctor said, "Just wait honey, just wait" Wise words indeed

RowanRavyn Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 Originally posted by Swoup Yeah. Bovine growth hormones will do that to ya. I'm sure this plays a part, but my mama started when she was nine. Her mama started when she was nine. My mama is 70, her mama would be 100. Were they putting hormones in beef that far back?
quankanne Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 halleluia, something relatively minor in the scope of scary things ... Ro, I'm glad this was the case, I know you were pretty worried about today's appointment. She looked at the doctor and said, "Being a girl is so complicated!" The doctor said, "Just wait honey, just wait" tell her to think of it as a roller coaster ride: some parts she's going to want to clench her eyes closed, other parts she'll be screaming her head off. But the whole while, it's going to be one exhiliarating ride
