There's a stretch where you put your leg on top of a bar, a barbell on a smith machine that is. Have the bar at a height to where you can make your legs make a 90 degree angle. Then, have your lifting partner slowly raise the bar (obviously your leg will be going higher) the goal is to get your legs to make as close to a 180 degree angle as possible.

 

I was told to do this to ultimately loosen up hamstrings, anyone have any input to this?

If you have a partner who is up for stretching why not just do some PnF stretches for the hamstrings?

'loosening up hamstrings' is not necessarily a good thing. The tendons are made of a fibrous cartilage-type material that is actually not made to stretch, and over- doing it can damage them. As they have virtually no blood supply they take a long time to repair and heal.

Such stretches can take years to perfect.

They can also do irreparable damage to the vas deferens, if you over-do them or hurry the process.

This can interfere with fertility and cause erectile problems.
