But if you have been texting regularly all day every day without break since you started dating....then when I got busy I would've said "I'm super busy, I was given a bunch of stuff to work on. gotta run, ttyl", or when I was available again I would say "wow, I was so busy at work this afternoon, how are you?" But don't make a big deal of it. Don't go into long winded explanations. Just short, sweet and pick up where you left off. If he's grumpy over it, don't bring it up. He'll get over it. It's his issue. He should understand you work and have a life outside of him.
