Any experiences or feelings about the adage, "when poverty comes in at the door, love flies out the window" ?

We went through 6 months surviving on very, very little. Aside from rent and bills, we had about $400 of spending money each per month, for groceries, food, and other purchases. We're still here, 2 years after that. :)

To be fair, though, it was difficult and definitely a strain. So there may be some truth to it, but really, what is the use of a fair weather relationship? It's the hard times together that really tests a couple's mettle.

Lately I've been wondering exactly what life is like for the large worldwide population of people who live off of dollars a day, who don't have money for soap, who live in slums. What is the love life of these people like? Is it the same?

Any internet user is probably not qualified to answer. But just in case anybody out there is knowledgeable...

Isn't your guy a doctor? Am I mistaken?

If so, then you would know it was only temporary, and better times ahead...

I do know a few, back when I lived in SE Asia. Some of my classmates were from the slums, and worked their butts off to help their families survive after school.

Their love lives seemed to be largely the same as anyone else's, even though their lives in general were very different. They did tend to marry earlier and within their small community.

He was a medical student before he was a doctor, and I had moved to be with him on a visa that had limited employment options, so it was two people surviving on a student's allowance. ;) But yes, I agree with you, that was only temporary and probably not the best gauge. Still a better gauge than never having gone through hardship at all, though, IMO.

I guess poverty is relative. I was brought up in a fairly hellish area at the time. Was not much cash to go around.

But yes maybe it can derail people. It shouldn`t but i have seen it within my own family.

Their love lives seem quite active, judging from the numbers of children in the slums. I would suggest they zip it up and have fewer kids so they could save some money and live a little better.
