I spent 12K and 2 years of my adult life in braces, so yeah, bad teeth are hard for me to get past.

They don't have to be perfect, but since it was such an investment for me I have a hard time tolerating bad dental hygiene in someone else.

I kind of look at it like, if I was at one time fat, but got fit, could I date a fat person? Nope.

you have a good point, ive spent thousands over time and I cant get past it!

Depends on the bad. Like "doesn't brush their teeth ever" bad? I couldn't deal with that.

But, a few crooked teeth? Not a big deal. I have a few crooked teeth myself and I'm not going to get them fixed. No point at this time in my life...

So I've thought about getting braces, but the thought of having wires and rubber bands on my teeth for two years puts me off. And I wonder sometimes if a girl would be put off by it too--i.e. she doesn't want to feel like she's going out with a guy who looks like he's from high school (because of the braces).

I work at an orthodontic office. If you look around, you would be amazed by some of the technology that is out there now.

There are actually clear wires and brackets. They are almost impossible to see in pictures unless close up. They do sometimes yellow, but for the most part, you are going to avoid the wire mouth look.

If you don't need TOO much movement or adjustment to your bite, you could go the Invisalign route, or many offices offer a generic tray system comparable to Invisalign.

Another idea if you don't need too much work- some offices offer limited treatment, like upper only or just the first 4 teeth. We have a system we use that reduces treatment time to about 12 months versus the full 2 years. But, again, that is only if not a lot of major work needs done.

One final solution I would highly recommend is lingual braces. With lingual braces, the brackets and wires are actually on the inside of the tooth, but the adjustments and tooth movement works essentially the same way as if they were on the outside. Our lingual prices are higher, because it takes about twice the chair time as traditional braces. But, you may want to look around and see if you can find someone to do them and get some pricing on them. This system is great....You honestly cannot see the braces and your smile looks exactly the same from the outside, and no one can tell you have the braces in your mouth....unless they are all up in your mouth, and I do hope you have/will have someone all up in your mouth in the next couple of years. ;)
