Hey Loveshack, I don't normally post anything on the internet but this is a nice forum that I very occasionally like to read or post on, so hey.

Anyway I was having a quiet weekend last week, I looked in the mirror and noticed my hairline was getting a little high up for comfort. So I mulled it over for a couple of minutes, thought to myself how much hair basically just pisses me off, it's always messy, I never knew what to do with it whether I was 7, 17 or 27 (now) and after a few more minutes I got out my clippers, that I normally just use for my stubble/beard, and yeah I just went at it.

In fact I effed it up with the first cut, taking off way more than I expected, and then I just thought screw it and carried on. Pretty much just a stubbly 3mm cut now. Big change for me.

So I come into work on Monday morning and, after 4 years in that place without ever getting a compliment, I got at least four/five complements - one lady even said she thought I was just some rich guy walking around from head office.

I am floored. I am so effin surprised. Only thing I regret is spending so much money on damn haircuts. What a waste.

Anyway, I wondered if this was unusual? Does a stubbly/shaved head just suit some guys better? Are people just being nice because they reckoned my hair sucked anyway?

Thoughts please fellow Loveshackers. Peace!

Dude, I was in the same boat four years ago. I'd known for about ten years that my hair was thinning, and that there was a balding spot up top. However, my hair always kept a "fringe" at the hairline that made it easy to convince myself that I still had hair. Finally I saw some photos of me taken from an elevated angle, and there was no denying it. I had almost NOTHING up there.

So, one day I bought an electric trimmer, and started growing a goatee. And then one day, I buzzed my whole head. Seeing that looking back at me in the mirror shocked me at first, but then I got used to it. I got quite a few compliments on it, including a few people who said it made me look "badass". :)

In my case the goatee really helped, I think, because it added some detail to replace what was missing on top, and it stopped me from looking like a big bald baby. :)

I've kept it buzzed ever since, never letting it get longer than a few millimeters. It's cool that I don't have to worry about styling it, bedhead, hathead, or spend money on shampoo, barbers, or "product".

It also made a bit of a statement to myself, which I characterize like this: "oh, you want to lose a bit of hair, do you, head? F*** you, I run this bitch. We're taking it all off!!!"

i think shaving a head when its time is the right thing to do ...i think it can look smart clean and tidy on any guy........and normally is an improvement visually with a receding hairline that is obvious....feels nice to rub......deb

Yes.

Maybe, but you can get a good idea of this based on how they are complimenting you. If you've gotten 4-5 compliments, I would say they aren't just being nice.

It's a look that can work for some guys, and it is way better than a combover or trying to hide balding with creative hair tactics. :D

Thats good!

I am not far having to shave mine off, I am dreading it. Most people think it will suit me, I'm not so sure

Good on you! Sometimes you just gotta change the hairstyle up.

I shaved my head a few times completely (using a razor and shaving cream) for medical reasons. After that I liked it and kept it that way. The only (female) negative response I got was from my mother.

Now my hair is longer again but not because of what others said. I just keep shaving it and then growing it for a few weeks or months out of comfort and a need for change.

I'm an old man, graying and balding at the back, and frankly sick of "grooming" what excuse I have for a haircut, so I just get a crew cut 1/8" once a month or so.

I like it, looks like I'm outta Breaking Bad, my wife is not so keen, but I didn't notice we make out more when the hair is short, kinda reverse Samson!

I thought the same dude. My hair wasn't like a comb over or something ridiculously hateful, it was just getting to the stage where it was starting to cause more anxiety than it was really worth.

Going for a Bruce Willis 3-5mm cut was the best decision I've made in a long time. I've had nothing but compliments, I think shaving it off shows you to be more masculine and just all-round in control or something - because you're not playing let's-pretend-I've-got-hair any more. It's really, really liberating. And it looks badass, but that's just a positive side effect :)

I started cutting mine short years ago (I use a 2). I love it. So easy to maintain and I can cut it myself. Saves a ton in $$$.

I know my STBX loved it. And I think the young lady I'm seeing now likes it as well. She just kept running her hand through it a few nights ago. My young daughter does the same.

Though I do have to cut it very often. Starts to look "poofy" as it grows out.

Yup I swear my hair grows at different rates, slower on the front.

same experiences here. I was receding and graying and finally figured I'd just get rid of it and shaved it bald.

The next day at work a lady I had never seen before walked up to me and started talking to me in the parking lot. I honestly turned around to see if she was talking to someone behind me. I hadn't had a complete stranger approach me in years.

That was several years ago and here is what I have come to realize since then -

'balding' is something that happens to you and it is disfiguring, emasculating and universally unattractive and is the butt of jokes for men and women alike and women will insult and put down balding men without the slightest conscience or regard. Most men raised in a civilized society would never put down a fat woman to her face but women do it to balding men without hesitation.... but anyway I digress...

Taking a razor and shaving your head completely bald is a STYLE. That is an important distinction to make as it is an intentional style as opposed to a sign of a condition that is happening to you.

Like all styles, some people like it, some people hate it, some people don't give a crap one way or another and some people REALLY LIKE IT!

Buzz cut looks good on me. oldshirt hit the nail on the head about bald being a style and not necessarily indicative of a condition.

I'm 30 and thinning a bit more and is slightly more apparent in the crowning but it's never made me look bad. I actually look better with less hair. Imagine me wearing a face that I used to wear 15 years ago?! haha...I look so much better now.

Also it helps that I'm tall and have a deep voice so being bald is seen as 'masculine. Look what it did for Walter White ;)

My hair drives me crazy, I'm never quite sure what to do with it :( plus at 28 its starting to thin out at the top with a quite high hair line (I've always had this problem), luckily i'm fairly tall so most people don't notice.

not sure about shaving my head, rather scary and not something you can really change your mind about half way through.

Being tall does help, but yeah being bald does give you some lingering insecurities!
