I am a female and I am 5ft 10 and weigh about 148 pound. I want to loose weight and tone up but I don't want to look skinny. My arms for example are fat, how do you tone up one particular area? and will it make me loose weigh on my arms?

You can't lose weight on your arms without losing it on your whole body. What you can do is tone up those arms doing pushups or buying a pair of 5 lb dumbbells. There are lots of videos on youtube.

Your weight actually sounds about right(or at least close) for a woman that is your height, providing you dont have a very small frame..

I'd suggest a weight/strength training regimen..Women respond very well to weight training, and unlike what most women believe will happen, they wont get all jacked and pumped up...Problem upper arms are an issue for some women, but most usually respond well to weight training..

Do you currently belong to a gym?

If I was your height and was a bit flabby, I'd want to be about 142. You can't spot lose weight but sure can tone up. A bit of weight loss will take some off the arms. Other than that, strength exercises.

Just a note. Get a second opinion on your arms. We often obsess on a body part when somebody else might go...'huh'? Also, get that second opinion from a 'fit' female...not somebody out of shape. Overweight people often have a distorted view of moderation or body image...'it's ok to eat two cookies because I used to eat four'.

Your already skinny.

Seconded.

That weight for that height? You're at an ideal weight already. You can't control your body's fat distribution. If you think your arms look 'fat' but the rest of you is rather slim, then that 'fat' won't go away.

One of my pet peeves is an obese person telling me how/what to eat. They read about the latest fad diet, try it for a few days and then complain diets don't work because they go back to their old habits after losing weight and regain the weight. That's only if they bother trying to lose weight at all.

True.

I like a quote from that rascal Karl Lagerfeld. He eats well and keeps himself slim.

'Healthy people congratulate me and comment how fit I look for age. It's only fat people who call me skinny. Guess whose opinion I value more?'

Yes and I go regularly. I am always worried about bulking up, but then I look at some women who clearly workout and I don't think it looks so bad. Maybe ill give it a go and if I don't like it then ill stop.

Precisely, no-one goes to bed normal and wakes up as the Incredible Hulk.

Bulking up is very difficult for a woman. Give it a go and you will see.

^^^This...

It puzzles me why so many women think that the minute they lay hands on a barbell that they will look like a 70's era Soviet woman powerlifter..I dont get it..

Sure, Ill bet that Serena Williams would get pretty beefy if she hit the weights seriously , but she is not the norm..

Most women that train with weights get toned and fit and show no evidence of this look...

Go for it!

Mesomorphs build muscle more easily than ectomorphs and if a meso has a layer of fat, they will look bigger.

Do Tracy Anderson's workouts. She is known for keeping women smaller but toned which is why the stars love her. She has many DVDs and her programs are designed for different body types. A bit pricey but probably cheaper than the gym in the long term.

Not if she is a woman. At 5'10'' and 148lbs she isn't likely to be in any danger of that.

OP, give those weights a try, good luck.

I have been killing myself in the gym for a year and I don't look anywhere close to a power lifter.

I've been going to the gym since high school. Have always been well toned. My boyfriend loves my body but jokes that I have the strength of a wet spaghetti noodle.

Few women put on much muscle. We tend to emphasize the good curves by working out. A taught body also helps put a youthful spring in your step and adds elegance to your posture.

Do you do what power lifters do? That, and genetics play a huge role, in if you are or are not going to look like a power lifter.

I do! And I still don't look like one. My shoulders are wider from boxing which can be a challenge when it comes to buying clothes  but that's about it.

OP I don't think you should concentrate on 'losing weight' per say. Your weight is fien the way it is and chances are you'll gain weight (while losing inches) if you start weight training to tone up.

Excellent advice. Hit the weights. You won't turn into a gorilla (bulk), that is a myth. Get medium heavy dumbbells, a pullup bar, and do body weight exercises. You may not lose much weight (and you shouldn't), because you will develop muscles that tone your body.
