Im newly single (7 mo) and I really need to get out to meet new people. I heard about this site, and being Im in a big city, there are tons of groups.

Just curious how it works and what you thought of it if you joined.

I do this and I really enjoy it.

Word of advice: if you try one group and don't like it, don't be discouraged. Try different groups until you find one you like. I had to try so many before finding the right one. I've also found that most members belong to several groups, so if you also have 2-3 main groups, you'll start to see certain faces regularly.

Great site. Like spiralout said, try a bunch of different groups and you will find ones that you really enjoy. Good luck!

We have this in Sydney Australia as well.

From not being in that area. It really is a great way to meet new people. I only had to go a few times and in no time. Met new friends pretty much straight away.

I agree. You do see certain faces with these things. Once I met 2 friends. Then got introduced and we already knew each other. He he.

With these people they introduce you to who they know as well and you become friends with their friends also. It is pretty cool.

I ended up moving back home and wish that there was something like that back here. Still in Australia but not as big of a city. Still have friends here but loved meeting new people in Sydney.

I still keep in touch with everyone and visit them also. Only an hour out.

Don't be afraid to mingle or even go there on your own. I did. Everyone is there for exactly the same thing and all seem pretty friendly. All good.

Umm no. I was there 2 meet friends. Never met anyone on there to date. I was just looking for new friends.

I think it would be pretty disappointing if you did that to look for a date but you never know I guess.

I think OP was going there to look to date. I don't recommend using Meetup for that at all. Could work if you are lucky.

Yes, I've been to one. You have to pick the crowd though. I once when to a language exchange events full of college students (i'm 24 with 2 years of work experience, I'd like to meet someone my age with work experience too) and having a bunch of college kids asking "your job is cool", "I don't know what to do with my future, maybe my parents will pay for graduate school" isn't fun at all..

But of course there are fun ones as well, you just need to look and try.

Yeah I agree. They aren't particularly looking for a date there, just meeting new friends. But I did meet someone there whom I'm now gone the 3rd date with though.

There are meetup groups for singles. If the OP is looking to date it wouldn't be odd to go to one of those events with the hopes of meeting a person to date. That is specifically what those events are for actually. If you are attending a singles meetup for the first time the hosts actually give you instructions on how to mix and mingle. There are singles groups for young professionals and 40 plus etc. It's an easy way to dip your toe into your dating pool without the pressure of online one on one dating.
