social proof, (when it works) is like a tasty desert sitting in the refrigerator while you are on a diet or watching what you are eating...your logical mind says...no I am not going to eat the desert....no way!...thinking about not eating it...let me just look at it once again as you find yourself opening the refrigerator and don't remember how you got there...No... I have will-power will not eat the damn desert...and then the imagination, kicks back in... bring up that tasty desert again and again until you finally freaking eat it!!! For some people it's easier to notice a guy with a girl and wonder what does she see in him as the imagination begins kicks in...and of course she doesn't often get to either have the cake or eat it too...because in reality there is plenty of cake to go around that is out of her view.

I'll throw in from my personal experience that its a yea, but I think some of it has to do with the newfound freedom and confidence as one other poster mentioned. I exhibit those quite noticeably.

A man with a girlfriend or a wife is less desirable to me, although some women seem to prefer unavailable men (and then look for sympathy when it doesn't work out).

THis depends on the circles you roll in or encounter. I have seen cases where men who were seen with women or seen as taken tended to be pursued based on behavior. Other times, the women could care less. Preselection theory.
