Keenly Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I've been talking to this girl for a while. She is in Missouri and I'm in California. As a late Christmas present, I sent her a box full of stuff. Double bladed Darth maul light saber, star wars poster, c-3PO and R2-D2 pez dispensers, a poster of the sith/Jedi creeds that I had made up for her, and complete with one pack of all of her favorite candies. Box weighed less than 6 pounds and it still cost me 30 dollars to send. Are there ways to make this kind of thing a little cheaper if I want to give her presents ? 1
InnocentMan Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Wait until she moves in with you. You will dream about these days. A time when you had a dollar left for yourself. In the meantime, try buy any presents for her from her local area, and get them to deliver it.
d0nnivain Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Have them delivered from / through the company you buy the gifts from. Certain places offer free shipping. 1

I imagine it was the light saber and poster that did you in as the rest could have been shipped in a flat rate box for about 15 dollars. Did she love it?

I hope she likes them . I guess I'll have to start using the companies to deliver it to her rather then getting it here first. Most of this stuff I already had, like the lightsaber and the pez dispensers. 1
Els Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 ROFL. Welcome to LDR-hood, Keenly! We usually send much smaller and lighter gifts. Jewelry, cards, etc. That way you spend less on postage, which means a bigger budget for the gift. The real money crunch in LDRs is the flight tickets IMO. Edit: Yes, using her address directly for online shopping is a good workaround too. 1

Also, yeah, the plane tickets. I'm about to experience that one in about a month or so. But if were going to be honest here, the amount of fun I'm going to have will far outweigh a half-nation journey. 3
liloldlady Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Are there ways to make this kind of thing a little cheaper if I want to give her presents ? Nope................. Dude, seriously, $30 is nothing. I could go on.
Els Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 the amount of fun I'm going to have will far outweigh a half-nation journey. It definitely does, if you are compatible! That's why we do/did it. Have fun!
LittleTiger Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I second all the suggestions here, especially 'keep it small'. With the entire planet between us, any gift that weighs more than a bar of chocolate has to wait for face to face delivery, so we very rarely send anything by post. We're all different of course but, apart from the cost of flights, which is essential, we prefer to spend our budget on actually doing things together. I would always choose a fun day or night out, holding hands with my guy, over a material gift that lands on my door step. 2
USMCHokie Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Flights were the biggest money drain for me...

When we were LD, my guy once talked about getting me some fairly expensive gift (I don't remember exactly what). I told him, save the money! That could pay for half of another trip. And I would always, always choose the trip over the gift. 1
