Onethirtyeight Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Do you think of an average person as being someone who is typical for their demographic, typical for everyone, or just neither good or bad looking? Just food for thought. Personally I think of an average looking woman as being a woman who looks typical for her demographic.
ponchsox Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Everyone's option of attractiveness is different. Average to me is 5/10. Features and personality can either add our subtract from that number.
MrCastle Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Average to me means common. Typical. The bulk of people are such. There is a small part of the population I consider extremely attractive. And a small part of the population I consider the opposite. Most people I encounter fall within the middle of those two extremes. Doesn't mean they're not attractive. They just don't blow me away. Doesn't mean they repulse me either. They're in the middle. 2
Author Onethirtyeight Posted January 3, 2014 Author Posted January 3, 2014 Maybe this isn't as profound to other people as it is to me. I've always figured what someone finds to be attractive to be fairly subjective. I just realized that even the concept of what makes a person average based on what you value can vary from person to person. Ponchsox, You say a person is average if they are a 5/10, which would really mean they're above the statistical average. 1
Author Onethirtyeight Posted January 3, 2014 Author Posted January 3, 2014 It's when a girl gets called "cute" Naw, cute is way better than average. Aren't you a girl?
Author Onethirtyeight Posted January 3, 2014 Author Posted January 3, 2014 Yes I'm a girl. Yeah so you can't really say what calling a girl cute means IMO. Unless you're a lesbian or bi you're not attracted to them.
Eau Claire Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I found most guys who described themselves as a average looking on OLD were actually a bit better looking. In contrast, average body means a bit overweight. I suppose the 'average' does mean pudgy these days so it makes sense. I only ever responded to guys who listed themselves as athletic.
Leigh 87 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Well, I think I'm cute; and I'm fairly average. I'm sure most men won't look at me and think wow. Yet, because looks ARE truly subjective, I have had guys who did think I was gorgeous upon first sighting mel; even though most men probably don't look twice at me. Castles description of average is very fitting. Average is basically the vast majority of people who don't stick out from the daily crown of people.

By castle's definition a lot of moderately good looking people would be average. I've said this before but I think you're face is fairly attractive and I might call you cute. Interesting to see what people think about this.

I think average looking is only relative to the person judging the appearance of another person. What is average looking to me can run the spectrum amongst my friends- and vice versa.

Like is 5/10 your average or do go for the more statistical approch like I do, or maybe like Castle's definition its someone who just doesn't stand out.
Leigh 87 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 However, I'm average yet I get to enjoy being a ten to my boyfriend.
AntiSocal Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 "average" imo is around 4/10-6/10 Not overly ugly, but not good looking enough to make me think "oh they are attractive"

Attractiveness is neither completely subjective or objective. There are some aspects of attractiveness, such as male height, income, status, facial symmetry, even race, etc, that are objective and can be readily measured and compared. There are other factors of beauty that are subjective, such as a preference for blondes over brunettes. Trust me , you'll know if you are beautiful or not and you'll know if you are ugly. If you are neither of these things then you are average, or close enough to the mark.

I've been called everything from hot to bland (aka unattractive) by women. I was just thinking about it because I think of average in the statistical sense but as this thread shows more people think of it in the 5/10 sense.

There is no other definition. IME words mean nothing , actions do. Women will call men they find unattractive beautiful and sexy just to appease them, esp to their male friends. You know the story about the guy who's always perfect for another girl but not her?

You know the story about the guy who's always perfect for another girl but not her? By the statistical sense I mean typical for their demographic. As if you could create a composite person that represents someone of the same sex, age, social status, and race. I always figured that was the only fair way to do it because of all the bias involved. I mean you just can't compare a 22 year old white actress to a 50 year old Mexican janitor. A 5/10 is just neither attractive or unattractive. As to what you said women lying to a man's (my?) face. They do it, that's why you can't trust your friends or family when it comes to things like that. I've had both ends of the spectrum from people I can trust aren't lying to me(ie, random chicks at concerts and bars). IDK why it is but I've had attractive women hit on/check me out/make sexual advances(that I don't take because I'm not into easy chicks) and then the next day I have some chick turn me down because she thinks I look like ****. I'm not normal though. Edited January 3, 2014 by Onethirtyeight

Lady2163 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Good question. I think of average as "normal" for the demographic and dating locale. Which in my case, for my age (mid-40s) would be: Education - at least high school diploma Language - English is first language Religion - Christian, probably Protestant Looks - some grey hair, thinning hair, some wrinkles, would look better if they lost a size or two, glasses, teeth not as nice as they were (even the poorest kid in my class had braces, we were a pacifier generation). What amuses me with OLD in the description is medium. Medium to me is a medium size t shirt or sweatpants. Period. I see a lot of men who describe themselves as medium, when I know they have to be wearing an extra large - and it isn't because of height or muscles. I'm not saying women don't do the same thing, just I haven't looked at a lot of women's profiles. 1
BikerAccnt Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I guess I consider average to be around the middle range of what I'd consider attractive, where most people would fall. Average, as someone else said, doesn't mean not attractive, it just means not of above average attractiveness. Nothing like being vague right. I guess beauty is like obscenity.. I know it when I see it! Someone else raised a question with me though. They said that guys listing avg on their profiles are actually usully a bit chubby because that is the average today. Hmmm. I list average on my profile but, maybe you're right. When I look at most guys my age - early 50's - I am definitely in better shape than most. I'm 5'11' and 190lbs. I wear a size 36 loosely. I'm not fat and get to the gym regularly. I don't consider myself athletic looking because I don't think I'm overly muscular, but, maybe I should change that average part of my profile? Because weight wise, I guess I may not be average for my demographic.

rocketman122 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 (edited) average doesnt mean S***. IMO average is 5-6. ive dated a 6 and thought she looked amazing. in my eyes she was hot as hell. its all about attraction. leave the numbers it means nothing. I dont think some women are attractive when the vast majority think shes smoking hot. bar rafaeli comes to mind. pretty yes, but for me, beauty does so much for me. sex appeal is WAAAAAYY more important in a woman. personality, her attitude, the way she dresses, even the way she does her makeup hair, or even her walk... all, much more important. and no, if she walked up to me and asked for my number, I would not give it. not because im a snob but no attraction and thats everything imo.
