Another woman wants her cake

Generally, when I take my girlfriend out, I plan the date and pay for it. This works for me - as long as I have the ability to plan, I can pick activities that cost very little. Therefore, to the extent I resent spending money, I only have myself to blame for not planning a walk or DVD movie or cooking date.

However, she is more of a party person than I am and, of course, New Years' is fast approaching. I suggested we go to a football bar at 8 and then a quieter bar for a midnight toast. She suggested we go on a cruise. I agreed, somewhat pleased that she felt comfortable enough to offer input. Then this followed:

Her: "You do realize it's pretty expensive, right?"

Me: "I figured. How much?"

Her: "About $150. Each."

Me: "Okay. Were you thinking I should pay for both of us, or just my ticket?"

Her: "Just yours. Since I suggested it, and it's more expensive than what you suggested, I'll pay for my own. I wanted to compromise."

Maybe I'm taking my specific situation and incorrectly concluding that it's a normal thing in society, but from where I stand, this is pretty common. When a woman suggests a check be split (under any circumstances), it's considered a nice gesture. When a man suggests a check be split, it's considered cheap.

Have your experiences matched mine? What about when inviting a romantic partner to an event like a concert or game with advance purchase tickets? What about when inviting a partner on vacation? I want to see how the discussion here differs from the discussion on TOS.

What made you title this in the way you did? Is it a reference to women having our cake and eating it? Why "another woman"? Is this a reference to the latest in a long line of women who have eaten cake on their dates with you?

Why the hell WOULDN'T you have cake and eat it?

It's a stupid saying.

Good questions.

I think because the cruise is expensive it would be silly to have one person pay the whole thing.

However as Taramere aptly points out... This seems to be a general gripe rather than specific.

If you eat it, you can't have it to save for later.
