Under The Radar Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 In my city there is a professional match making service. It's not inexpensive (about $1300 for 6 months), but they have a good reputation and boast an 85% success rate. Though, I have no clue what their definition of success is (marriage, LTR, etc...) They do the interviews, profiles, pictures, and networking. Introductions are not made unless both parties agree to a meet. Unlike OLD, they do the legwork and my responsibilities don't begin until I show up for an actual date. I read through many of the testimonials and was encouraged to investigate it. Anybody have any thoughts or experiences with this sort of thing?
CarrieT Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 They are boasting a success rate that may not be true. The first thing you should do is google the name of the company then the word "scam" and look for OTHER reports that may not be as flattering.
carhill Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 For that kind of money, they should do a complimentary consultation. Interview them like you would any other vendor. If it scans, it does. If not, not. Since matchmaking is personal service, and requires a legal contract, or should, meet up in person and see how it goes.

I followed your suggestion and it seems the reviews are split down the middle. Some people are claiming it's a scam and not to waste your money/time. Others are incredulously claiming they have no idea why some experiences have been negative. The positive customer reviews are citing it as an incredible resource, but that clients have to go in with a realistic attitude and patience. Oh well :/

Yeah, I think I'll call them up and hear what they have to say ...... it cannot hurt just to ask some questions.
CarrieT Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Yeah, I think I'll call them up and hear what they have to say ...... it cannot hurt just to ask some questions. Just know they won't be honest with you. They are in the market to sell a service. They are not as concerned with getting you a date as much as they are with getting you to give them money. With those reviews that you read that are glowing, did you trace them back further? They might be shills. Remember: Caveat Emptor.

TheBladeRunner Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I am embarrassed to say I signed up for one and it was a complete waste of money, believe it or not is was no better than any other type of dating be it OLD, or IRL dating. It's nothing but a bunch of "blind" dates that they put no effort into even coming close to sending you out with the type e of person you are looking for. I say a few extra pounds I get morbidly obese, I tell them must be somewhat on my side of town, I get an hours drive. All the people I met through the service were socially inept as well, several NEVER in a LTR and they are in their mid forties as well......weird and soo not worth it.

Damn, meeting people IRL when you are self employed, no longer in school, and friends are all married is tough business. Since I'm not going to date my clients that leaves things like OLD, Meetup Groups, and the occasional blind date through a friend. I thought the professional dating service might be a breakthrough . At least I still have a sense of humor through the entire process.
carhill Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Closest thing I came to using a 'matchmaker' was using a couple agencies for services while in-country when dating internationally. I used mainly two during my travels and they were great, and I maintained a friendship with my interpreter from one of those agencies for a number of years after. In a way, they functioned as 'matchmakers' since they profited from my interactions with their clients and utilizing their services. The key was that both operated professional offices with staff and always billed as services were provided. No money upfront.

You seem cool enough, I guess I fail to see why you would need to do so. Perhaps I am all wet, but for you it seems perhaps a waste of money?

Yep, if you get to meet some cool people it wouldn't be a waste of money at all. However, it seems I'd be jumping blind without a parachute here. Don't worry, I'll keep you updated with humorous play by play commentary .
