Popsicle Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I have recently been encountering people who want to have long, deep conversations by text. This is not something I enjoy doing. At all. I like trading short text messages, to say good morning or pass succinct bits of info, especially if we can't talk, like at work or something, but I'd rather save the long conversations for when we see each other or for talking on the phone. It doesn't matter how into the person I am or how I like them so much, I still get frustrated with long text convo's and pretty quickly too. The thing is, these are people I love and want to continue talking to (frequently even) but I just can't do the texting. I always find myself wondering why we are spending so much time texting, long, deep convo's mind you, on a small phone keyboard, especially when we could just pick up the phone or come over. Anyway, I am wondering if there is a way to gently convey this without making them think I simply don't want to talk to them. I don't want to ignore them, as that would be rude and I LIKE having them as friends. I want to have these conversations, just not by text. I have said several times to several different people that I'm bad at texting or that I don't like texting and every single one has just ignored me and continued on texting. It was almost like I didn't even say it. A couple of people insulted me for it. I think maybe people don't believe me. That's the only reason I can come up with why some have just blatantly ignored me. Is there a way I can politely yet firmly let them know that I'd rather talk, not text?
CarrieT Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Easy. The next time you receive a lengthy text -- or one that seems ready to segue into an in-depth conversation, pick up the phone and call. At that time, you can explain that you prefer talking over texting.
