I'm thinking of getting a breast reduction.

Has anyone here had the procedure done? Would you recommend it?

Well I'm actually seriously thinking of getting a breast reduction. Can you believe over the last few months my breast have continued to grow and I am already 21!!! I had an appointment a few weeks back with a surgeon and he explained how it all works. I want to go from a size 34DD to a size 34C. The only reason why I am planning to do this is because I am starting to get back aches other than that I LOVE 'EM!!!! I still have not decided to go for it because it's scary.

Maybe you should make an appointment with a surgeon and have him/her tell you what are the procedures for your exact case.

My wife just had a breast reduction back in September and it went very well. Luckily for us our insurance paid for most of it. She just comented to me last night that her back hurts a lot less now than it used to. She also no longer gets rashes or migraines. She was fairly saggy from two pregnancies and I think it really helped her self esteem to get the reduction and the lift effect. She looks a lot better in her clothes now. They took approx 1 lb from each side and she went from a 38DD to a 36C/D. It just depends on the brand of bra whether it is a C or a D.

Traditional breast reduction which is what she had does leave a lot of scarring and how it will look in the end does depend on how other scars on your body have reacted in the past. This part is my opinion from a guys point of view and it may not hold true for everyone but I think it helps to be in a long term commited relationship because it gave my wife much more confidence to have the reduction knowing that I would love her no matter what the scarring looked like in the end and myself and her doctors would be the only ones seeing her naked in the future. Being a breast man myself I will have to say that thankfully the scars are fading nicely and it has only been four months.

As I said above, her surgery went very well and she was only in the hospital one night and she was back to half days at work after only six days of recovery. I have heard other people say that their recovery took longer and their were more complications involved so do your reasearch beforehand and find a good plastic surgeon. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice! I'm in the process of checking if my insurance covers the surgery....I hope so.

I'm a little worried about the scarring, but I don't usually scar alot so hopefully it won't show.

Gunner, did your wife lose any of the feeling in her breasts? I've heard that there can be numbness and in some cases complete loss of feeling. I definitely would NOT want that :(

She didn't lose any feeling exactly. She still has feeling in the breast everywhere but her nipples are a little less sensitive. As far as the scars go, the only ones you can see when she is standing up are the vertical ones leading up to the nipple area and the ones around the aereola. They seem to get lighter by the day. The major scars which are the horizontal ones are hidden in the folds of the breasts and you can only really see them when she is lying down.

I had a breast reduction done about 10 years ago and it was the best thing I've ever done! I only wish I could have done it sooner. I used to be a 40 DD (and actually probably was even a little bigger, but try to find an E bra...and who would WANT to? ;) ) Now I'm a 38 B.

Anyhow, before the reduction, I could never participate in sports like running, basketball, etc. for obviously painful reasons. Plus there is always the self-consciousness about the whole thing. It's pretty hard to not be aware of them when guys are always staring at your boobs instead of your face when you talk. Or you get people in the family saying, well, yeah, we know who got ALL the boobs! That gets a little old after awhile. And then there is the problem of getting clothes to fit; being out of proportion makes it difficult, and I hated looking like a Dolly Parton wannabe.

My surgery was the one where the nerves were left intact (basically, where nothing is actually 'cut off', but moved higher and only excess fat from underneath is removed). There ARE techniques that will leave your sensation intact and you will be able to breastfeed. If you get a doctor that says you are not a candidate for that kind of surgery, get a second opinion.

Most of my sensation is the same, except for underneath where the fine scars are (there were other incisions but they disappeared)....and even the scars that are left are almost invisible now. Like someone else said, they are not visible if you are standing up.

My actual surgery was quick...I had it done in the morning and went home that evening. I had to wear surgical gauze underneath until the oozing stopped (I think that was maybe 2-3 days?). I was out shopping in a few days, and it was not that uncomfortable unless I lifted my arms up (not recommended!). You can return to work quite quickly, provided you don't do any lifting....I believe the lifting ban was for 6 weeks. I was given painkillers, but I never had to use them.

Trust me, though, if this is really bothering you, you will NOT be sorry you had it done, provided it is done by a qualified surgeon. I honestly believe that the reduction changed the quality of my life. :)
