HELP!

I have a boyfriend that is 5'10, about 185/190 pounds, fit and he is VERY manly. Like loves to hike, camp, go backpacking, just bought a home and loves classic rock.

He made a Christmas list for me and some items were new dishes, terry cloth robe, Pearl Jam CD's, slippers, cologne etc. But I don't know what kind of dishes to get him or what size terry cloth robe and what brand or what fit. I don't know what kind of slippers or what kind of cologne. So I'm basically lost. I want to buy him something nice and unique that he would use all the time and enjoy, but I'm lost at brands, sizes and colors. Like kitchen plates? Where do I buy them, what color dishes, what brand??

I just figured I would make this thread and get ideas from people and what they bought for their men!

So share your ideas! :-)

Ask more questions regarding the details of the gifts he wants? He gave you a starter, so gather details and purchase them.

As a man, I'm apparently very hard to buy for since I am a minimalist and really don't value posessions. My fiancee asked me what I wanted and I just winked at her. That'll do... that'll do :p

Cologne = Hugo Boss. I get compliments all the time. I even had a mom at the grocery store send her daughter (who was giggling the whole time) ask me what I was wearing because I smelled so good and wanted it for her husband. It was very funny and flattering. He will enjoy the attention and you will enjoy a good smelling man :)

This is good advice especially if you arent pleased with his current scent haha!

If he doesn't go commando, cool underwear is always a good standby. Tip: muted colors/patterns instead of whites.

If he has a home bar, or wants one, adding some barware relevant to what he customarily drinks, would be well-received.

The AC/DC 'Live at Donington' DVD. You can both enjoy watching Angus Young get down to his undies on stage :D

Any small item relevant to his outdoor pursuits.

if you know him its easy for you to buy him something.

What is the point of this comment? I know him, but I want to know what other people buy their man or what men would like...

I want ideas, not statements. What do you like as a man, if you are a man ?

I'm getting my boyfriend snowshoes since I already have a pair and most of our dates involve time outside. And I'm making him a batch of homemmade apple jelly since its his favorite.

If you want to get a robe, check the size of his shirts for a reference. Colgne would compliment the robe nicely

I would avoid the dishes - not very romantic. That's something his parents or another family member can get him.

It really isnt that easy either even if you know them better than anyone. You always want to make it more special for just that reason and that makes it so much harder!

A lot of men's robes are one size fits all, so that should be easy. I could venture a guess as to large for the slippers. I have some mighty fine, never used pilsner glasses and steins for ya! Heck, you shop for mine, I'll shop for yours!

I'm with you Philo. My late wife of 12+ years could never figure out what I wanted b/c I never NEEDED anything. Eventually, I would be pressured to come up with something and would...eventually.

My gf will be wondering, but she's pretty good at just finding something, something from the heart and thought-out. So, any gift from her will be fantastic! And that includes a lot of "under the sheets time." :)

Dishes? Anything that doesn't have flowers on it. Stripes on the edge or solid color but look at it with men's eyes not yours.

Check his shoes for the size for the slippers and remember to use men's eyes when you buy them.

Check his jacket for the size and use your men's eyes when buying the robe. Remember no flowers. Solid color, no furry things on it or lace

Cologne? My advice is to buy something that you like and let him know that it really turns you on. When you tell him that, you can buy a bottle and put sewer water in it and he'll wear it. Make sure that you like the fragrance.

Glad we got that all cleared up huh?

He gave you a list! That's a good start. But I FEEL YOU on the whole "men being hard to shop for" thing. My BF and I have 3 years together and I STILL struggle to come up with something each holiday season.

Cologne: if he's manly, look for something with a tobacco or leather note. All mens colognes have them, but you want something that leads with them... manly men don't want to smell "soapy." I like CK Euphoria, but it might not be "manly" enough for your guy. If you go cologne, stop in at Ulta and ask an expert.

Dishes. What color are his cabinets? If they are white or black, buy something gray, blue, or a muted pattern. If they are natural wood, buy something in taupe with a pattern (not plain taupe... that's too bland.) If you aren't sure, these dishes have both and will suit just about any kitchen/dining room situation: Sango Nova Black Dinner Set (Again, those are the ones my BF has. Classy but not showy, you know?)

Something that's not on his list could be hiking paraphernalia. Or a trip for two to go see something cool; I don't know where you live, but in the past couple years I've gotten some outdoor ventures for my BF: sea-kayaking, a cabin in the mountains, skiing, etc. Sometimes I opt for a vacation-present... and then get him a little something small for under the tree.

I'd get some kind of plain dishes or a set that comes in a box. Mikasa often has nice choices. You can find other sets in Target or Walmart. Do you know what color his kitchen is? If so you can get a solid ring of color around the edge in that color as long as it's masculine -- think blue. Otherwise, plain white or cream will be fine.

As somebody else mentioned men's bathrobes are often one size fits all. If you are really at a loss, go to the nicest men's store in your area & ask questions of the sales staff in the men's department about what size would fit a man with his dimensions. Even if you can't afford to buy the robe there, you will have a size to work from when you go to a more affordable store or on line. Again think masculine colors: Black, grey, dark blue, brown etc. To narrow it down think about what colors you see him in most often. Pick a fabric that you would like to snuggle up to.

For the cologne, pick something that drives you wild.

Well slippers and clothes and stuff - its totally cool to ask him his size if you don't know it. Colour and Brand wise just go on what colours and brands he wears.

Cologne - is very down to him. Depends if he's picky or not! VictorinoxSwiss Army Unlimited might be cool though, if he's outdoorsy - there the company that make the knives, it kinda smells like fir trees.

Saying that you could always get him an actual swiss army knife if he hasn't got one....can I say I love getting knives and the like for presents without sounding like a psycho?

Seeing as he's just moved house that should make it easier - you could get him some kitchen gadgets if he's into that or just some boys toys - darts board, poker set - that kind of thing

Aftershaves always nice too.

With most guys you can never go wrong with a set of screwdrivers..even when we have a set they start to disappear and the one we always need isn't there.

I'm a tool guy so anything related to tools is good for me..

If he just bought a house does he have a set of cordless tools ? if no then get him a set..

lots of trees to trim... an electric pole saw (remington)...that is one he wouldn't buy himself but would love to have.

This is an excellent idea! Does his home have a "man cave"? You could find something really cool to put in it.

I would honestly just search around his house for ideas for some of this stuff. You could take a quick peak in his medicine cabinet to see what brand of cologne he likes to wear. If you're getting him dishes, look at the dishware he already owns. If he has any knickknacks that he uses to decorate his house, that can give you a feel for his taste in dishes as well.

You can also choose things in his favorite color. You shouldn't be afraid to ask if you don't know. If you can't find out for some reason, then I'd suggest going with things that are blue. Most guys seem to really like that color.

I also always go to websites like Amazon, Target, etc. and look at the average rating from reviewers to narrow down a particular item with regards to brand, type, etc. You can narrow down your search by the ones that got high ratings. Things with a lot of reviews and high ratings are probably going to be well appreciated.

Since he gave you a list of things he wants, I would definitely stick to purchasing things from that list rather than trying to guess at other things he would like. That's always much safer.

I would also say to stick to the list he gave you. As far as brands, you could ask him what brand he prefers, or you could take him shopping to help you pick out the specific items. With my adult children, I usually take them shopping for Christmas and birthdays, and they pick out what they'd like. That way, the gifts are sure to please, and we make a nice day out of it by going someplace special for lunch or dinner after shopping. My husband is very practical, so he either tells me what he would like and where to find it, or I get him something I think he could use. But if your boyfriend gave you a list, that takes most of the guesswork out, and you could either ask him what brand he prefers, or take him along shopping with you.
