greenfairie Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Any advice for a gal who lives on the West Coast? I'm spending almost two weeks with my boyfriend and we just started dating. This is the longest time we would be together in one place. I want some input on how to keep it fun and not so boring. I'm just nervous the trip will turn out to be a bust. I feel like I'm probably over thinking it though. But if you guys have ANY ideas/suggestions on where to sight see, eat, do, or anything.. I'm OPEN to suggestions. Thank you!
youaremysunshine Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 The Staten Island ferry is great at sunset, and free. Although it might be cold on the deck this time of year. 1
mammasita Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 There are TONS of things to do in and around NYC. I'm sure you'll have plenty to keep you occupied. Statue of Liberty / Ellis Island Museums Broadway Plays Shopping Central Park Rent a car and Drive to Jersey/Boston/DC/Atlantic City Times Square Thats just off the top of my head - Do a little internet searching for the hidden gems.... 2
Balzac Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Give us an idea of budget. What area of NYC are you staying in? He's work free for 10 gays?
TigerCub Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 I just came back from NY (it was my 2nd time out there) - I love NY. There is so much to do - you could: - See a Broadway show - Go to Times Square and check out the different places there - Check out the culture - they have a tonne of museums/galleries - If you're into partying, they have good clubs - Central Park is always nice to check out - Staten Island was mentioned by another poster - good idea *Those are just the typical touristy things off the top of my head - but there is lots and lots to do - I doubt you'll get bored. Just check out the different burrows - so many places to see. 2
TigerCub Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Didn't mean to copy you mammasita - I was busy listing things when you replied
Author greenfairie Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 Give us an idea of budget. What area of NYC are you staying in? He's work free for 10 gays? Yes he is work-free for 10 days, we're flying to meet each other in NYC. We're staying in Harlem most nights on and a few nights we're staying at the Marcel in Gramercy Park.. that's in Manhattan, I believe.

But for sure, at least 600-900.

normal person Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 - Top of the Roc observation deck (better than Empire State Building because you can see the Empire State Building when you're up there). They might have the rink open to go ice skating now too. You can also skate at Bryant Park nearby - East Village and Lower East Side if you're under 30 (or young at heart, or totally nuts) and like to drink at night - Smorgasburg / Brooklyn Flea Market - Try food from as many different countries as possible - Go to a sports game. Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Giants, Jets, etc - Take a walk along the High Line in Chelsea - Take a booze cruise around the island - Go shopping in SoHo as opposed to just Midtown - Go to a rooftop bar at night - Go to a taping of the Daily Show, Colbert Report, Letterman, Jimmy Fallon, etc - Search for landmarks from your favorite movies
d0nnivain Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Check out a great travel site like Tripadvisor.com Also try sidewalk.com Look into getting the CityPass so you get discounted admissions to various tourist attractions. You should get a metro card to travel by subway. There are tons of things to do in NYC but it's an expensive city. I don't think $1,000 is gonna cut it for $10 days. In many places 1 drink is $10. You will want to learn as much as you can about low cost & no cost things to do. wandering around & people watching is one of the best free things you can do. If you will in NYC for the holidays go to Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas tree & watch the ice skaters
Balzac Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 I know you can have great fun on $100/day. You won't be dining at PerSe or sitting court side watching Knicks,Nets or $300 seats on Broadway but who cares. MTA is cheap n easy. Most museums have a weekly "free" admission time. Cheap Eats of all variety abound.
TigerCub Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 Sweet! This will be my 2nd time as well. Do you have any specific names for clubs/museums I should go if I want to? I'm sorry, I went to a club/lounge the first time I was there, I really liked it, but I can't recall the name - But I'm sure you can just google a few and read reviews and pick a nice one. That's how I picked the club we went to the first time, and it was good. This time, we didn't do the typical club thing, but we went to a bowling alley called Bowlmor and it actually has bars and a restaurant and stuff in it. It was pretty cool. As for museums - First time - went to check out The Met (Metropolitan Museum), and another one, I think it was the Museum of Modern Art. 2nd time - went to the Guggenheim - it's very architecturally beautiful, but the "artist" they were doing the exhibit on - I dunno, I just didn't like his stuff and it all seemed so pretentious. The part where most of the art/museums are are in Museum Mile (everything is close together) so you can pick and choose what you want to see without travel time. 1

KatZee Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 (edited) Darn! I was editing and got interrupted 20. A really corny (but fun) dinner and music joint in Times Square: Ellens Stardust Diner | Home of the Singing Waitstaff 21. Seinfeld's Diner: Tom's Restaurant - Home 22. Katz's Deli for a true pastrami sandwich: http://katzsdelicatessen.com/ 23. REALLY COOL museum: http://www.tenement.org/ The Tenement Museum. I would put this on the "absolutely to do" list. It's so interesting to see how people lived in the old days. It's completely decorated with the original items of that apartment building. A bunch of floors to see. And after you check that out, nearby is: 24. Sammy's Roumanian Steakhouse http://www.yelp.com/biz/sammys-roumanian-steakhouse-new-york This place is SUPER corny, but something you HAVE to do. It literally looks like a basement Bar Mitzvah. There is a guy pounding on a keyboard, and at one point you all get up and dance the Hora around the restaurant. 25. Best NYC Burger: Jackson Hole http://www.jacksonholeburgers.com/ Edited November 7, 2013 by KatZee 1
