Is it just me or has the world started using the word awkward a lot more over the last ten years. Especially women. Everything is awkward. My feeling is a) it's not awkward if you don't make it awkward so stop bringing attention to it and b) a lot of things (and guys) are just awkward in life so it's kind of self-defeating to make it such a big deal about it.

I agree. The meaning nowadays seems to really be:

Awkward (adj): word that uncreative people use to avoid evoking their personal insecurities about seeming weird to onlookers because they don't know how to/don't want to respond to honestly.

Basically a "re-affirming the group norm" kind of verbal enforcer. VERY annoying.
