At many parties I have gone to, random guys have approached me and has said something along the lines of.. "my friend thinks your really cute and he wants to dance with you".

these guys approach me, and they are strangers i've never met who happen to be students at my college. I don't even look at them or notice them until they talk to me. I'm dancing with my girl friends. Why does a guy always mention that his friend wants to dance with me? why doesn't he want to dance with me himself?

i do find myself to be physically attractive, so i don't think they are bs-ing about that part. why doesn't the guy who actually talks to me, want to dance with me?

Also, the random friend that this happens to that night always is standing there in his own world, looking oblivious. Does he even know that his friend is trying to set him up with me? He doesn't even look at me. Or is it to look casual because he's embarrassed? It makes me feel bad that the guy who actually has confidence to talk to me, doesn't want to dance with me himself. I don't know.

You're mistaking things. The guy who "has the confidence" to talk to you does so because there are no stakes involved for him. You're not rejecting HIM.

The guy he's talking for would probably do the same for his friend, if the situation was reversed.

That is one aspect of being a wing man!

So basically his insecure friend tells him he thinks I'm cute/he's into me? Or is this just sporadic? Does the insecure friend know his guy friend is going to talk to me for him?

Yeah, most likely. The friend mentions something about thinking you're cute and he says I'm gonna go tell her! He goes and the other guy looks aloof as if he has nothing to do with it.

It's pretty common... (or at least, it was, in my time and if it's still happening to you, I'm guessing it still is!)
